Pritzker says Trump should order nation to wear masks: ‘It’s not too late for the federal government to make an impact’

Gov. J.B. Pritzker, an avid critic of President Trump and his response to the COVID-19 pandemic, called on the federal government Wednesday to require face coverings and to devise a national strategy to try to contain the virus that has killed more than 133,000 Americans.

“We need a national masking mandate. We instituted ours in Illinois on May 1, the first in the nation. And it aligns with our most significant downward shifts in our infection rate,” Pritzker said in testimony video streamed to the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security. “It’s not too late for the federal government to make an impact. In fact, it’s more important than ever.”

The governor also said the federal government failed in putting together a national response as the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the country. Speaking at a virtual hearing, Pritzker said a plan to get personal protective equipment and testing supplies was nonexistent.

I wonder how many people are experiencing health issues from wearing the masks?

I wonder how many people seriously think that a President — any President — can ‘order” private citizens do anything?

Maybe there’s a veritable Holocaust among mask-wearers in the EU, where it’s now mandatory, punishable by $200 fines per violation, just like seat belt penalties. No one’s really keeping track. However, since the mask penalties went into effect, there has been universal compliance and a notable drop in both infections and deaths. We have over 5x the UK’s population. Our daily death numbers are 20x the UK number.

Trump needs to get over his personal vanity and embrace masking, while slamming lockdowns as a path to economic cataclysm. If he can embrace DACA wholesale, a real downer for the base, and something I consider a betrayal, he can embrace masking, which could save lives.

Not legal and Trump knows it. Trump has only made requests of the citizens and not illegal mandates like the dems.

You want to ware a mask, do it. I don't, and I fuly agree with Trump on this. Maybe the real vanity here is you thinking you have any standing to make such an statement. I mean, what the F have you done?

You like masks? Wear one. I value my freedom. I also am not impressed at what Europe does. 200 dollars is ridiculous.

Actually, Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the Civil War. Ordering that masks be worn during this health emergency falls well short of that.

We are losing 1,000 people a day to this bug, mostly the elderly, who tend to be Trump voters. Why is he holding off on protecting a demographic critical to his reelection chances? He should split the difference and order mask-wearing, while banning all state-imposed lockdowns, via a declaration of national emergency. His poll numbers are already in the toilet, so what does he have to lose?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_Corpus_Suspension_Act_(1863)
[At the outbreak of the American Civil War in April 1861, Washington, D.C., was largely undefended, rioters in Baltimore, Maryland threatened to disrupt the reinforcement of the capital by rail, and Congress was not in session. The military situation made it dangerous to call Congress into session.[5] In that same month (April 1861), Abraham Lincoln, the president of the United States, therefore authorized his military commanders to suspend the writ of habeas corpus between Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia (and later up through New York City).[6][7] Numerous individuals were arrested, including John Merryman and a number of Baltimore police commissioners; the administration of justice in Baltimore was carried out through military officials. When Judge William Fell Giles of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland issued a writ of habeas corpus, the commander of Fort McHenry, Major W. W. Morris, wrote in reply, “At the date of issuing your writ, and for two weeks previous, the city in which you live, and where your court has been held, was entirely under the control of revolutionary authorities.”[8]]

Yes, under what authority and what means of enforcement?
And why should federal mandates for NYC LA and Chicago be the same for small towns in Wyoming Idaho and Maine?
Maybe Trump should order Pritzker to lose weight to reduce risk of death more effectively than masking

I don’t know.

I think Trump is seriously exposed on the subject of masks.

I don’t think it is winning any votes he doesn’t already have.

And I think it turns off middle of the road voters.

Just saying.

Would you stay home or vote for Biden if Trump put out a mask order?

Maybe he should also order that you sit when you pee. I mean where does it stop? If you want to wear a mask, or sit when you pee for that matter, why do you need Trump to tell you to do it? He’s POTUS, not your mother.
