California could release up to 8,000 prisoners to prevent coronavirus spread, officials say

California will release around 8,000 prison inmates early in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus in state correctional facilities, with more than half expected to return to society by the end of July, officials said Friday.

The move will allow prisons to use the extra space to impose social distancing rules, isolation and quarantine measures, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.

“These actions are taken to provide for the health and safety of the incarcerated population and staff,” CDCR Secretary Ralph Diaz said. “We aim to implement these decompression measures in a way that aligns both public health and public safety.”

The department estimates 8,000 inmates could be released by the end of August, providing they meet several criteria. Prisoners with a year or less left on their sentences are eligible for early release. Those with convictions of violent felonies and sex crimes are not.

Anyone released from custody will be tested for the virus within seven days of their return to society, the CDCR said.

Several states have opted to release some prison inmates early amid a surge in infections in correctional institutions. California has reduced its prison population by 10,000 since mid-March, when the COVID-19 pandemic first triggered government protection measures in the United States.

As of Friday, the state prison system reported 5,841 coronaviruses among inmates, which increased by 864 in the past two weeks.

In San Quentin State Prison in San Francisco's Bay Area, infections among prisoners soared after the transfer of 121 inmates from the California Institution for Men in Chino, which reported hundreds of cases amid crowded conditions.

Yes in this case though they are really concentrating on destroying California.

And usually the worst neighborhoods. That’s the irony of it. Prisoners don’t suddenly have new places to go and live when they get out. They go back to their neighborhoods and they commit crimes there again.

New York City has gone nuts letting prisoners out. It has not affected my area at all and it wont. Let Manhattan and Brooklyn burn

Staten island is just fine. as I’m sure many of the neighborhood’s the people on here are living. We get very upset but they are destroying their own neighborhoods and killing each other mostly. Actually the vast majority

Gee, what about the ‘spread’ of dangerous criminals? They REALLY don’t care about lives, do they?

That train already left the station. They moved infected inmates into San Quentin, and caused many other infections. I think even a couple of death row inmates died from it. 🤗🤪😆🤑🥳

That is a damnable lie.

The state will be in dire straights next year and they will reduce their expenditure by some $648,000,000 by releasing these cretins in the following year and it may be more.

The information available on Google says it costs $81,000 to house each prisoner on average.

8,000 x 81,000=648,000,000

and it may well cost more than that.

This is nothing more than a budget trick and they are dressing it up as something else...

Follow the MONEY!

Budgets are depleted. This move cuts expenses bigtime for the incarceration system.

Sometimes I wonder if the Dims plotted with the ChiComs to release the virus. Releasing criminals when they want to ferment riots and chaos seems more than a coincidence.

Don't worry, the prisons will soon be full once again with whites who refuse to kneel to BLM, muzzle mask refusers, people who used their guns to defend themselves, and Christians who sang in churches.

The same leftists who support emptying out prisons are beside themselves that Trump commuted Roger Stone’s sentence.

Keeping them in prison will prevent the spread of the Coronavirus outside the prison.

They are in prison because they committed crimes. Freeing them may result in more crime AND the spread of Coronavirus!

When will the "officials" figure that out?

Issue one mask per. If they die in prison, oh well!?

This is like not sending a bad guy to prison after conviction because you know his main rival is in there as well and you are to afraid to of what you might have to do to enforce the law.

Its not any fun enforcing the law on someone whom you already have substantial control over their life. We gotta let all these assholes go free so we have room for some fresh meat!

I’m not believing the “officials” didn’t figure that out
BEFORE they did it.

#Knowingly.

How many malicious decisions before it’s not coincidence?
