The Great Society/feminism is to blame for this part of the mess, not lack of universal state-funded daycare.

Welfare = Paying people to be unproductive, requires taxing productive people.
Taxing productive people means those productive people have to fewer dollars to spend supporting their families.
This means either they work longer hours or another member of the family has to work outside the home ie, the mother has to work.
Then there is Aid To Dependent Children. This program has the noble purpose of separating men from their children or if you prefer permitting men to father children with no worries of being financially responsible for their care or upbringing.
The War on Poverty should have been labeled the war to inflict poverty and ignorance on children.
