Sears did the same thing to the local retailers and mercantile in the last century. History just repeats itself.
And Walmart has become a retail behemoth in recent decades, which put many other businesses on the ropes or out of business. It’s part of the nature of capitalism that this happens.
Whatever happened to Montgomery Ward or Woolworth’s, for example? Whatever happened to Kinney Shoes or Robert Hall clothing stores? Whatever happened to Flying A gas stations? The nature of capitalism is that new companies can come along, and take so much business that the older established companies can’t compete anymore.
I thought 120+ years ago that Sears Roebuck shipped your delivery to the General Store for pickup. Only Sears didn’t own the storefront.
Fifty or sixty years ago a trip to a Sears Super Center was a delight, a chance to see things you didn't know existed because you lived in a small mom and pop era. TV began to create demand the only thing missing was the ability to get your hands on those things. The Sears catalog met those needs for years then they decided not to publish it so Bezos just built a web page, the rest is history, until the next chapter is written. Personally I am waiting for a replicator and holo-deck.
