Actually, the tie that has bound the “Arabs” (I have known Coptic Egyptians that reject the idea they are Arabs) to the toxic Palestinian issue began to be broken with the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
Given Israel’s border with Egypt, Egypt’s size (largest population in the region) and its role in the many wars with Israel, it is hard to imagine the other Arab states going to war against Israel when Egypt would not. The peace treaty with Israel began to deflate the strength of “Arab unity” on the Palestinian issue, and to deflate the toxic Palestinian position itself. From it Israel was eventually able to untie itself from Gaza and with Egyptian cooperation against Hamas there.
The next point of deflation was the treaty between Israel and Jordan - Jordan which itself once had a war with the political forces of the “Palestinians”.
It seems clear to me that the room - ability for compromise - for the UAE to make its agreement Israel was built with the prior treaties Israel made with Egypt and Jordan.
Yes, the agreement with the UAE is a big deal, a very big deal. My only point is I do not see it as the inflection point upon which the toxic Palestinian position began to lose its power in the region.
Agree on both points. Copts are probably the only actual Egyptians left. And the palestinians have shown themselves capable of losing support all on their own. Sometimes it takes diplomacy a while to catch up with reality.
