Are We Ready to Rehabilitate George W. Bush’s Reputation?

he George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum opened seven years ago and anchors the southeastern corner of campus at Southern Methodist University, where I teach history. In late November 2016, I took a tour of the facility with five college friends who were visiting from the East Coast. The recent presidential election was much on our minds as we wandered through the building, contemplating various artifacts from Bush’s two terms in office. Although we were hardly fans of his presidency, one of my pals—fearful, like everyone in our group, of a Trump administration—got misty-eyed when reflecting upon Bush’s obvious love of country. After an hour or so, with a requisite stop for photos in the museum’s full-sized and perfectly appointed replica of the Oval Office, we left in glum moods.

Only when he does the right thing and acknowleges and supports Donald Trump as president.

He prevented Gore and Kerry from the presidency. Other than that, I’d say no.

Like McCain and Romney, Bush was Hitler when the left needed him to be Hitler.

After the elections, they were all sufficiently obsequious to have the Hitler moniker rescinded, with no apologies offered or asked for.

Absolutely yes.

I support President Trump but Freepers should realize that 10 years from now we will likely be playing the same rhetorical games with the Trump legacy.

Bush was vastly superior to Al Gore.

Bush was vastly superior to John Kerry.

Every leader exists in their unique time. It is imperative for conservatives to stop falling for these stupid argument traps of “aw shucks— we miss George W. Bush and now we want to use him to subvert the current Republican President”

It is as old as Lucy pulling out the football from under Charlie Brown.

It is possible to understand and appreciate George W. Bush and understand and appreciate and actively support President Trump. Throwing Bush on the anti-Republican bonfires set by Faux intellectuals does absolutely no good.

People worry that Bush is not supportive enough of Trump— fair.

President Obama and Vice President Biden led a coup against Trump. They are still leading it. We need to stop trashing former Republican Presidents and focus on the enemies at hand.

It was whitewashed. It was rehabbed in real time for at least 12 years.

This is as good as it gets.

I’m not going to play along as they try to make him look good so he can trash a far better man.

Rhetorical, I know, but still: How is it there is no talk of rehabilitating the reputation of Bathhouse Barry? I hate these media and academic elites.

And President Trump doesn’t love his country? The “Make America Great Again” and “America First” Trump?

No, although I voted for him twice, (I mean look at what the democrat party put up). Looks to me now that he was just another globalist RINO. His failure to endorse Trump finally did it for me.

There have been two great Republican presidents in my lifetime: Trump and Reagan. There have been two very good but not great Republican presidents in my lifetime: Eisenhower and Nixon. There have been three Republicans who turned out to be disasters that I am shamed for having voted for president in my lifetime: Gerry Ford, Old Bush and his son, the idiot who invaded Iraq for no reason whatever and ruined an incredible number of lives in the process.

The stuttering drunk who covered for Saudi Arabia’s role in 9-11, killed thousands of Americans cleaning up Saudi Arabia’s Iraq problem, increased Islamic immigration, and tried repeatedly to end the USA in favor of a merged-state with Mexico via a massive illegal-alien amnesty?

No. Thanks. He should be remembered as the failed President that he was.

Trump is so much better than Bush. Bush was lucky that he got a second term.

Bush seems like decent, well intentioned guy, but made some truly awful decisions that have had terrible long term consequences. Primarily the ill-conceived Iraq war, and the admission of China into the WTO in 2001 (it was Clinton’s policy, but Bush was on board). Arguably, misreading the economy led to the 2008 crash and also gifted us Obama.
