Amid the Outpouring for Ginsburg, a Hint of Backlash
New York Times via Yahoo News ^ | September 21., 2020 | Jennifer Schuessler

Posted on 09/22/2020 5:57:51 AM PDT by John W

The internet learned to love Ruth Bader Ginsburg, so it was not surprising that when news of her death broke Friday evening, social media lit up with outpourings of love and admiration for this diminutive octogenarian who had been cast as an iron-pumping, dissent-slinging legal ninja.

But those who celebrated her as a one-woman bulwark against the collapse of democracy might have been surprised by something else bubbling up. Within hours of her death, there also appeared snarking about the pop-hagiography around her, edged with insinuating questions about just how far-ranging her vision of equality was.

Some noted her poor record of hiring Black law clerks and her comments in 2016 (which she later apologized for) calling Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protests “dumb” and “disrespectful.”

Others re-upped long-standing critiques of RGB-mania, and perhaps even of the judge herself, as reflecting a myopic “white feminism.” On Twitter, there were calls to remember those “left behind” by the brand of feminism Ginsburg supposedly advanced, along with mocking references to the public grief over her death as a “white women’s 9/11.”

“What conception of women’s rights, and what kind of feminist movement, might have died with Ginsburg?” Melissa Gira Grant wrote in The New Republic, questioning what she called “the false idea of Ginsburg as liberal or feminist savior.”

The whiff of a backlash reflects long-standing tensions within feminism, as a movement sometimes criticized for being symbolized by, and primarily serving, middle-class white women has been challenged by a perspective that emphasizes the interplay of race, class, gender and other factors. It’s a tension that has only grown amid the Black Lives Matter protests of the past summer, as some have questioned whether a highly empowered older white woman ensconced in an elite institution was a fit hero for the moment.

“Feminism at its core is nothing more than an anti-fertility cult that attracts Darwinian mutants.”

That is a good point, and many young professional women today are realizing that the children taken for granted by prior generations are more elusive than ever for them. Gender has become so politicized, and marriage law so risky, that many young American men are quite willing to “go their own way” and die childless (and financially secure). When you see how many young people (of both genders)have to look for a potential mate overseas, you realize how screwed marriage and families are in the US today.

She worked for free. Never received her pension. Hopefully, her pension doesn’t go to her kids.

Stop capitalizing black while leaving white in lower case. That is racism.

I hope the same mistake RBG made isn’t repeated by the Republican appointed Justices.

Here is current age and age in year 3 of Trump second term:

(D)Bryer AGE 83 - 86
(R)Thomas AGE 73 - 76
(R)Alito AGE 71 - 74
(R)Roberts AGE 66 - 70
(D)Sotomayor AGE 66 - 70
(D)Kagan AGE 60 - 63
(R)Kavanaugh AGE 55 - 58
(R)Gorsuch AGE 53 - 56

We can hope Bryer “retires”.

Maybe Thomas, Alito, and Roberts should bow out and allow Trump to replace them with YOUNGER Conservative Judges.

I like that chart. Would be good to know yrs of service. After certain number years 100% pension. Founders did not expect them to stay on forever.

I think it’s really pathetic the Ginsborg went right up to the moment of death worried about the vacant court seat she was about to leave behind. How pathetic! That’s all your life meant? A court seat?! Leftists are so freaking mentally ill as a normal state of being, theres no coexistence with them.

“celebrated her as a one-woman bulwark against the collapse of democracy”

That statement comes by way of a Marxist indoctrinated redefinition of “democracy” and it is totally detached from our Constitution. To the Left “democracy” is only served when someone goes in a direction it wants, and whenever something does not go in a direction the Left one, they will comment that “democracy” is in danger.

Remember that whenever you hear the Dims making comments about “our democracy” being in danger. What it really means is their power in some area could be diminished.

Breyer will be threaten with “suicide” if he even hints of retiring during Trump’s second term. Hillary will be right on it.

Breyer is another D appointed (Clinton ‘94) supreme court justice. At age 80+ he is the next one to tip over or retire. Another lib hopefully to be replaced by Trump.

It occurs to me that we need a mandatory retirement age for all Federal office-holders. Congress has leaned to the age of 70 as a good retirement age, based on the Social Security laws.

So I suggest that all elected officials be age-limited such that their term in office ends at or before 70. This means that a House representative is can no longer run as of their 68th birthday; a candidate for President is blocked after their 66th, and a candidate for Senator is stopped after their 64th birthday.

There is a perfectly good reason for this limitation: it reduces the chance of an elected official dying in office and starting a scramble like we have seen several times over the last fifty years. Not to mention mental issues.

Lifetime appointments? They stop on the 70th birthday, too.

Doesn't stop the over-70 crowd from taking on advisory appointments, so they can continue to contribute if they so choose.

Disclaimer: I'm above FRA (full retirement age) in making this recommendation.

If I were a ‘rat I’d be pissed that she didn’t retire on Obama’s watch, as I am sure many ‘rats are.

They are! I have seen rants where libs are screaming "F___ you, RBG!! F___ you! Why didn't you retire when Obama was President? F___ you!!"

Yes, they are pissed.

Trump should add “Hillary” as a potential replacement for RBG’s seat.
