Paper or plastic? In New Jersey, try neither.
The state Legislature on Thursday voted to make New Jersey the first in the country to ban single-use paper bags in supermarkets along with all single-use plastic bags in stores and restaurants.
Eight other states, including California, New York and Vermont, have bans on single-use plastic bags either in effect now or scheduled to go into effect in the coming years.
But by banning both plastic and paper single-use bags, as well as disposable food containers and cups made out of polystyrene foam, environmental advocates said the New Jersey bill is among the most stringent in the United States.
“This bill is probably the strongest, most comprehensive bill in the nation dealing with plastics and packaging,” said Jeff Tittle, the director of the New Jersey Sierra Club, which had been helping lead the campaign for the ban. “It will go a long way in our battle with plastic pollution.”
Opponents of the bill had argued that it could hurt businesses and that the ban should be limited to plastic bags, since many view paper bags as an environmentally friendly alternative.
But Mr. Tittle said by banning paper bags, New Jersey would be pushing people to use bags made out of recycled or other sustainable materials.
Heidi Brock, the president and chief executive of the American Forest and Paper Association, which represents companies that are part of the paper industry, said that she hoped the governor would block the ban on paper bags.
“The New Jersey Legislature has undermined an environmentally responsible option for consumers,” she said in a statement on Thursday.

Use the store’s boxes.
That’s the way I do it at Adli’s. I keep 4 or 5 boxes from the store in the trunk, load them from the cart and use those boxes to carry the groceries into the house. No bagging necessary and quicker too.

NJ banning paper and plastic bags. CA (Newsom) banning gas engine vehicles. Berkley banning junk food at check out counters. etc etc etc. Now tell me, who are the dictators in our society — it ain’t Trump or the Republicans.
I’d content that there is no such thing as a singe use bag in our house, either paper or plastic. At minimum, they see a second life as trash receptacles.
I would bring my own bags, but I am 80, and not so quick anymore. The lines will be even longer when they make us all bag out own groceries.
IF I encounter this attitude in a grocery store—I have 2 options:
I can walk out & let them restock everything in my cart of $300 worth.
I can have a store employee go to the aisle where the boxes of kitchen trash bags are & get me a box. Then, I have the cashier ring up THAT purchase & I use those bags to bag my groceries.
IF I lived in New Jersey & was close enough to the state border-—I would go out of state & do my shopping.
I live in N Nevada high desert —where it can get hot. I have to go over 22 miles one way to get any groceries. I carry 2 large coolers in my car at all times.
They just burned up millions of trees-—paper shortage to follow.
Better stock up AGAIN of Toilet paper & add Copy paper to that list.

It seems the Nanny State has to tell us everything. For example, “Needle sharing is bad.”
How about “Mask Sharing?” I haven’t heard about that yet. /S
Because of the chinese virus, the grocery store I go to banned plastic bags back in March, all you could get was paper....about 4 months later, they banned the paper bags and went back to plastic, about a month or so ago they banned the plastic bags again, now you can only get paper, it’s comical to watch.
Paper bags have useful repurposing possibilities. They are a renewable resource. They don’t/can’t strangle turtles or dolphins. They are biodegradable. They don’t pollute.
We used them for DECADES without problems.
WHY are they being banned? I also don’t mind paying 5 cents for one.
Paper bags are GOOD for the environment AND consumers.
THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE to the use of paper bags.

Back when I was kids, the clerk would skillfully pack your groceries in a "repurposed" cardboard box, using string on the outside to hold the flaps up.
Ban foam cups, bowls, plates, etc. They can all be made as paper products from the COMPLETELY RENEWABLE resource TREES!
More forest management, less forest fires. Win/Win.

You can just put your “leftovers” in your POCKET!
When you buy burger from the grocery store you’ll have to bring your own scoop then scoop out the amount of burger you want from a big vat of burger, then you go to the checkout, burger in hand, place it on the scale, pay, and carry your contaminated (from the scale) burger out to your car.
Now go back in and repeat for macaroni salad and everything else you want to buy.
But hey, we eliminated all packaging and saved at least one turtle and one dolphin, maybe even a manatee.
Stupidity on parade.
I think if I lived in that sewer, I’d just put my groceries back in the cart and then wheel the cart into the back of my truck. Wheel it into the house, unload the groceries, put the cart curbside for trash, ..... lather, rinse, repeat.

Living in NJ, I wouldn’t be surprised if the true goal is to stop the primitives from littering. As the WASPs and others leave, the imported replacements and existing welfare caste don’t have the same habits.

Wouldn’t be shocked if those that can simply opt for delivery. It is already common for people to “shop from home” then pick up their groceries themselves; this might just push some to have them finish the process and drop them off at your door...
