Ford F-150 Electric Pickup May Get Newly Patented Range Extender in Its Bed
https://www.caranddriver.com/ ^ | OCT 6, 2020 | BY ROBERTO BALDWIN OCT 6, 2020

Ford has patented a removable range extender for an electric pickup that sits in the bed and resembles a toolbox.

The range extender would act as a generator, recharging the battery of the vehicle using a small motor. The system could potentially make its way into the upcoming electric Ford F-150.

While automakers rush to get their electric trucks on the road, there are likely potential buyers who might still be concerned about range, especially in areas without a robust charging-station infrastructure. Ford might have a solution for those customers: a modular range extender that sits in the bed of a truck.

The Drive first spotted the patent, submitted in April 2018 and published on September 15, 2020. Its illustrations show a removable range extender that sits in the bed of a truck and looks like a toolbox. Inside the device would be a small motor, fuel tank, exhaust system, and electronics needed to hook it up to an electric truck.

Correction for spelling:

So, if an EV uses 10kw to go a certain speed, then brakes, it will use 10kw to stop, again either through fiction etc or braking. Any charging effect can only be less than the 10kw output, considering those same losses due to waste friction, electrical resistance, inefficiencies of the charging/battery system etc.

“Soon all F-150s will be electric and their drivers will be sipping $7 pumpkin lattes from Starbucks. Just you wait and see.”

Paying for those lattes with their fuel savings.

kw is power, not energy.

The charging during braking will be less than that during acceleration but it is still charging.

The ICE is burning fuel during braking. The EV is generating new fuel during braking.

I put a Range Extender in my V-10 Dodge. Can drive it 1,000 miles now without a gas station.

“100 HP worth of energy,”

HP is power, not energy.

Just don’t get into challenges with a Rivian EV truck.

10,000 ftlbs torque with a 0-60 of 3 seconds.

Do people understand where all the elements come from to make up all these batteries? Do they not know that China manufactures and exports the lion’s share of this stuff?

Once all these manufacturers start switching over to electric cars, they will will be yanked around by the short and curlies by China with massive price hikes for an ever decreasing supply of lithium and other elements. Until the point that manufacturing all the cars in China will be the only economic thing to do for these companies.

Think of it, your 2030 F150 will cost over $100,000 if they are still built here in the US.

And you can be assured if there are any deposits of that stuff here in North America ... President Biden will be more than happy to see the rights to those minerals to China for a fat check to the Biden family.

“Inside the device would be a small motor, fuel tank, exhaust system, “

So the vehicle that doesn’t want to use an internal combustion engine, will have a internal combustion engine to charge the battery.
Cool...

Buying an Electric Car for a Cold Climate? Double Down on Range. CR's experiences in bitter temps show that electric-vehicle batteries lose a lot of juice in the cold

"..The Tesla Model 3 has an EPA-estimated 310-mile range. At the end of that same 64 mile drive, it indicated there were 189 miles of predicted range. Put another way, the Model 3 used 121 miles worth of range in only 64 miles. That’s almost double the anticipated loss. "

All your bloviating about electric vehicles never does alter the laws of physics. Electric vehicles are all about childish nerd fests but never about reality and practicality.

So, 3 seconds to go 60mph, for what purpose? You can’t afford the tires or the speeding tickets or the resulting wrecks you’ll get into or the resulting lawsuits from those you hit.
