Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) said Tuesday on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” that President Donald Trump’s rhetoric has caused hate crimes to increase “exponentially over the last four years.”
Cooper said, “When you heard the crowd at President Trump’s rally over the weekend, chanting “lock her up” referring to you— I don’t know if it surprised you given all you have been through and come to expect— but the fact that that’s where this has sunk, and the president still continues to attack you in the wake of this is stunning

Based on what? Definitely not the FBI numbers.
First, are they really up, or are they just being accounted for differently? I honestly don't know, just asking.
Second, are we including "hate" crimes against President Trump and his supporters? Those are surely up.
But really, if you want to blame rhetoric for a loss of civility you leftists might want to look in the mirror. Who is calling people deplorables? Who is calling people racist? Who is calling people fascist? Who is rioting in the streets? Who is tearing down public statutes and monuments?
99% of the demonization, of issuing of public venom, etc. is coming from the left.
So in her mind, “Lock her up!” is justification for “Burn, Loot, Murder!”.

There was a Democrat “Human Rights Commission” agent who vandalized a synagogue in NYC during the 2018 election cycle.

Even the slowest of us realize that if she were correct in this statement, the conservative states, those states with thousands of citizens who consider President Trump their hero, would be the most dangerous states in which to live.
