24% of the population, though still about 40% Christian. Hizbollah might have something to say about that.
Hizbollah (a fundamentalist Shia Muslim group) was once a problem for Assad in Syria, but with Iranian pressure Hizbollah has been helping Assad against his predominately Sunni Muslim people.
If the Sunnis and Christians in Lebanon could get over their concerns as relates to the Israel-Palestinian matter
(Lebanon was a belligerent in the 1948 war, gave shelter to rafts of PLO backers when Jordan kicked them out of the West Bank (because Arafat tried to make a “civil war” against Jordan), and then there was the long Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon (trying to contain Hizbollah)
maybe they and Israel together could expel Hizbollah from Lebanon altogether, pushing them into Syria.
Of course one of the results of that could be a Hizbollah-Assad civil war, which could pit Iran (Hizbollah) and Russia (Assad) into conflict in Syria. That would be very nice.
