China has UPPER HAND if war breaks out with USA - ‘Extremely challenging' for US military

Neither side has the appetite for all-out war but experts fear their intense strategic competition in which both conduct carefully calculated tests of the other's resolve could spill over into violent confrontation. And US military expert Lyle Goldstein warned there was a solid chance the US could lose the first fight with the People's Liberation Army in the event of a full-on conflict.

Prof Goldstein from the Naval War College's China Maritime Studies Institute in Newport, Rhode Island, told Newsweek: "It is very plausible to say there is no guarantee of victory in the first phases."

He said scenarios for such a confrontation varied substantially but warned all "are extremely challenging" for US forces.

He said: "I think China now has adequate forces, including air, missile, electronic warfare, spec ops, naval, undersea and nuclear to likely prevail in the first phase and perhaps in subsequent phases too."

He said weaponry had a "quite important" role but said China would gain the upper hand because of its favourable geography, greater will and the willingness to strike first."

Because they have a manufacturing base and we don’t.

The only way to modernize our manufacturing base to that level is robotics.

Is LA worth Taiwan?

Wait. . . I'm thinking. Don't rush me.

I don't think the cost of keeping LA is worth losing Taiwan. That's what your question says. But you might mean the opposite--would saving Taiwan be worthwhile if it cost us LA?

I'm thinking, okay?

"As an ex-navy once serving in that area, I do not doubt, if unconstrained by traitorous politicos, beijing, china could be bombed into the stone age within hours by the United States military."

I sure hope you're correct because CCP is on a fast track to become world dominant. They are building carriers, aircraft, subs, missles, nukes at a dizzying pace. I just hope they subscribe to MAD.

Maybe they will win the first battle but that is simply because they will be the aggressors who initiate hostilities.

City dwellers will be the hardest hit in the United States.

Personally, after 38 years in the military and diplomatic corps, I welcome an attack on major US cities; call me crazy if ya’ll will but abortion has failed to cull the ranks of the socialists/communists and gender-benders so we need all the outside help to bring Americans back together - that will never happen without the devastation of war.

China will probably not hit major US cities in a first strike, hoping to force the US to leave their population alone when they attack our military.... That is a bad calculation because to hit US Military Installations they have to hit all the coastal cities, and places like Ft Bragg, Ft Hood, Ft Riley, etc. Besides the US will counter strike and try to served a knockout blow to end any regional war quickly by hitting China’s military units which is simply the CP or Political/Military leadership.

Note to China - If you hit SF, Chicago, NYC, Baltimore, Houston, Minneapolis and Atlanta, I propose the US sue for peace under the terms of agreement that China’s CP is now under threat of takeover by Biden and the US Communists in those cities.//Sarc Off//

This Professor agrees with the East Asian Affairs professors at U of Washington that we should become closer to China and ditch the strategic rivalry.

NWC does not pay him to opine on the relative strength of forces. He is paid to present data on undersea warfare capabilities of China.

And needs to be cashiered ASAP.

This ‘game’ has been played on the US population since WW2. There’s a giant unstoppable boogyman/juggernaut out there that is so far ahead of our capabilities that we have to go all out d*mn the cost in order to save our children!

Maybe it’s true, more likely it’s not - but past experience seems to suggest it’s more warmongery BS designed to keep the high pressure money firehoses pointed full open in the ‘correct’ direction.

China is weak. They barely train their troops and instead make them watch hours of CCP propaganda and recite party oaths. Their equipment is still years behind our own. They are plagued by demonstrations and a growing anti-party sentiment in their own borders, which they pretend doesn’t exist. They know in a direct firefight, the U.S. has the training, experience, and technology to destroy the CCP forces quickly and effectively. In such a conflict, we would need to fear a nuclear exchange as that is what desperate evil people do when backed into a corner. Given 10 more years, this reality may change in China’s favor, but right now any military aggression against U.S. allies or interests would be suicide for the CCP.

I’m not an apologist for China, and I actually go back 30 years, when a friend of my buddy’s, who was just on this side of heroin said, out of the blue (in 1990): “China has 100 million people living at Western standards.”

It FREAKED me out, and so I went to my handy 1990 World Almanac, and it said China’s per-capita income was $231 per year. No way they could have 100 million people living at Western standards with such a low PCI. But it still scared me, so I checked in 1991 - still $231, nothing to worry about. But it still scared me, so I check in 1992 - PCI JUMPED to $1728. At that point, I knew he was right all along. They were dangerous, very, very, dangerous. And now they’re more dangerous. And what do we do, why we argue about cutting the twangs off of 5-year olds.

We heard similar arguments on 12/6/41. They didn’t win but the IJN laid a smack down on us all across the Pacific from December 41 to late May 42.

We will be sent reeling if China makes a move with heavy loses. We can win IF we have strong political leadership and military leadership. IMHO we are very deficient in both, as Bitme is incoherent and a would be HOTUS wouldn’t fight. The Joint Chiefs can’t come up with a coherent strategy after 20 years in the middle east for winning, they are sadly incompetent politicians rather than warriors. These two issues leave winning any war with China with the issue in doubt.

Yep, the people who hide behind the flag here don’t take their wages and costs into account, nor do they even bother to question whether to believe the budget levels that China sends to rest of the world. USA is #1, and that can NEVER change, so why bother addressing China?

(just glad they weren’t around in 1941)

Maybe there is a great worldwide demand for 1980s Toyota Tacomas and Datson pick up trucks.,

Think of the savings if the Pentagon would have just bid out for a bunch of Toyota Hilux's (with rhino lining on the frame) or land rover Defenders instead of blowing all that money on the HMMV program. Instead, the government decided to ban import the Defender because it doesn't have an airbag, and the original concept of light pickup trucks like the Datsun and Hilux has been pushed out of the US marketplace entirely because of CAFE standards.

“These two issues leave winning any war with China with the issue in doubt.”

...and that’s putting it optimistically.
