Something huge and invisible is making nearby stars vanish, scientists propose

Suns that have gone missing may have been torn away by a dark matter monster An invisible cosmic behemoth might be tearing apart the closest star cluster to the Sun, leaving one side of the cluster eerily dark and devoid of stars, according to a new study.

The culprit may be a dark matter substructure, a relic that contains the mass of 10 million Suns and is made of a mysterious non-luminous substance.

The possible presence of this “Galactic lump” was detected in a new map that charts out the enormous extent of the Hyades star cluster, located only 153 light years from Earth, which was published on Wednesday in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Scientists led by Tereza Jerabkova, a research fellow at the European Space Agency, came across the unnerving lump while examining the Hyades cluster using data collected by ESA’s Gaia satellite.

Overhead, without any fuss, the stars were going out.

Ha!

No, that one leaves a trail of debris. Zones of darkness would indicate...

Wasn't that the ending to a story where they bought an IBM to print out all the possible names of God?

Yep

Perhaps God is making the stars vanish. Prophesy fulfillment?

Yesterday’s news.

I see what you did there. If we're seeing it now--you're reminding us--it happened billions of years ago!

I don’t get my news about astronomy (or anything else, really) from World Nutcases Daily.

Overhead, without any fuss, the stars were going out.

Chilling and classic story.

“Then one by one the stars will all go out, and you and I will slowly fly a way.” Remember that song?

“Dark matter” is an example of science relying on a miracle to explain what they do not understand.

The universe has no interest in sharing its secrets with the hairless apes.

It sounds like something that is happening here on earth. It begins with a “D”.

This is like the telephone game children play where “I ate a tuna salad sandwich” gets turned into “Ali dates Cuban sailors Sunday”. The original article in A&A reported by Vice and then re-recorded by WND.

Here’s the original article in Astronomy & Astrophysics, published in March, by the way, or last Wednesday:

“ The 800 pc long tidal tails of the Hyades star cluster
Possible discovery of candidate epicyclic overdensities from an open star cluster⋆

https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/full_html/2021/03/aa39949-20/aa39949-20.html#S18

It’s about how tidal forces can generate localized areas of high density. There’s nothing about dark matter eating stars.

The “Galactic lump” is composed of all the socks lost in the washers and dryers of all the species in the universe that entered a split in the time space continuum.

#26. Nothing worse than an iridescent blue planet-eating space turd.

Paging Commodore Dekker.

William Windom was great in this Star Trek episode “The Doomsday Machine”.
