Scientists fear that a highly contagious new COVID-19 variant that is ravaging Peru may be resistant to vaccines.
The Lambda mutation, or C.37, appears to have emerged in Peru last August — and is now being blamed for the country having the highest pandemic death rate in the world.
The concerning strain has since spread to around 30 countries, mostly in Latin America — but also as far as the UK, which has recorded at least eight cases, according to government figures.
There are no known cases of the Lambda strain in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In Peru, Lambda has accounted for 81 percent of new infections tested for variants since April, according to the World Health Organization.
The South American nation currently has by far the highest mortality rate in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
There, nearly 10 percent of those recorded as being infected end up dying — with the death rate of nearly 600 for every 100,000 citizens almost double that of the next nation, Hungary, the data shows. The US is 21st with just under 185 deaths per 100,000.
“Our data show for the first time that mutations present in the spike protein of the Lambda variant confer escape to neutralizing antibodies and increased infectivity,” wrote the researchers from the University of Chile in Santiago.
That could explain why it has been able to take hold despite Chile “undergoing a massive vaccination program,” the study warned.
“Considering that this variant has rapidly spread in Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina, we believe that Lambda has a considerable potential to become a variant of concern,” they concluded in the preprint paper that has yet to be peer-reviewed.

Pure, clean drinking water can become toxic to the body - hyponatremia.
Now, obviously, that's an extreme. But that's what were talking about here and it happens far more than the "average" person may think (especially with athletes). Going way beyond recommended amounts.
And just like that clean water, vitamins/minerals when taken in the extreme and/or out of proportion with other vitamins/minerals can lead to unintended problems.
Getting regular blood level checks would be a wise decision. That way, any such toxicity should be more likely to be found early.

Re “What about the Peruvian Llama variant”?
Check it against the Tibetanese Llama variant” and see if they have the same Red Chinese “nudges” and “markers”.
Taking it farther, as in “far-cical”, Peru has bats in caves and Chinese”carry-out” meatmarkets and eateries.
Red Chinese has bats in caves with the COVID virus(es) as well as meatmarkets and eateries.
Therefore it is logical that the Red Chinese are responsible for the bats in Peru and the new variant LAMBA COVID-19.
Also blame it on the “Tri-Lams” fraternity in either “Nerds” or “Animal House”, or both.
As they ask in the Chinese restaurants in Lima, Peru, “You want fries with your bats?”
We could rename this Lambda variant the “Mao-Chu Pichu Wuhan Cave Flu”. Also known as “Mao-Flu 4U”.
Does this fear of resistance include the use of HCQ or Ivermectin?

Looks like they are not using the Moderna vaccine in Peru. They have Pfizer and AZ perhaps others in the pipeline
There are over 200 viruses from multiple families that cause the “common cold”. To create a vaccine against that many different viruses from totally different families, it’d cost $30,000 a year. Are you going to pay $30,000 a year to avoid getting a cold? Yeah, me neither. Thus, no cold vaccine.
Has nothing to do with technical feasibility. It has everything to do with the economic viability of the product.
