Study links Texas winter freeze, power outages to polar vortex
France24 ^ | September 3, 2021

Warming of the Arctic caused by climate change has increased the number of polar vortex outbreaks, when frigid air from the far north bathes the central and eastern United States in killer cold, a study finds.

The study in the journal Science Thursday is the first to show the connections between changes in the polar region and February’s Valentine’s Week freeze that triggered widespread power outages in Texas, killing more than 170 people and causing at least $20 billion in damage.

“It is counterintuitive that a rapidly warming Arctic can lead to an increase in extreme cold in a place as far south as Texas, but the lesson from our analysis is to expect the unexpected with climate change,” Cohen said.

Climate scientists are still debating how and whether global warming is affecting cold snaps – they know it's reducing the overall number of cold days, but they are still trying to understand if it leads to deeper cold snaps.

Cohen's study is the first to use measurements of changes in the atmosphere to help explain a phenomenon that climate models had struggled to account for.

“The Texas cold blast of February 2021 is a poster child" for the link between a changing Arctic and cold blasts in lower latitudes, said climate scientist Jennifer Francis of the Woodwell Climate Research Center on Cape Cod. She helped pioneer the Arctic link theory, but wasn't part of Cohen’s research. “The study takes this controversial hypothesized linkage and moves it solidly toward accepted science,” she said.

Climate modeling can't do it because it doesn't make sense, so we will MAKE it make sense. Right.

One of the great things about global warming is there is less cold air:

In. fact there will never be another outbreak like Feb 1899 in TX.

Linkage is not necessarily causation.

It sounds like the winter freeze is being linked to a cold air mass?

Was this an expensive study?

Global warming causes freezing. I’m all caught up now.

Calling Captain Obvious. 😁
Hey, I was in Southwest Texas (Del Rio) in 1973. We got 13 inches of snow, and temperatures in the teens. Guys were ice skating between the T-38s on the flight line. At that time, they were pushing global cooling. I believed it. Then they figured out that global cooling didn’t work, so the scum bags of the earth, changed it to global warming. What scum bags.

Yes it is so counterintuitive that I just don’t believe it.

BBC - and other FakeNewsMSM - have been effortlessly reporting on climate change drought/famine in Madagascar followed by climate change flooding in North America. whatever.

The ONLY question that I see is whether we can get enough CO2 into the atmosphere to prevent another freeze like Texas.

But thankfully, China, India, and the third world, will do just that for us, even we decide to shut our economy down.

What makes this so ridiculous to us old timers is that we’ve seen too much.

Yes, since childhood I’ve seen that winters tend to be warmer now. Lakes used to freeze over from the extended cold, and that hasn’t happened as often now.

I also remember playing outside when it was over 100. It was hot but it wasn’t dangerous - few had A/C so you just sweated a little. I have noticed that night-time temps seem to have risen, due to urbanization in my opinion.

All in all, I’m pretty happy with the climate. I’ll keep it, thank you.

It seems to me that the last few summers in Texas have been milder. We just got into September and no string of 100+ days in July and August. That matches what I believe to be true that we are actually heading into a period of global cooling due to a Solar minimum cycle that will run for the next 10+ years.

Yes it’s THE SUN STUPID, that giant fireball in the sky that changes the Earth’s temperature 60 degrees in 24 hours. It plays the significant role. All other factors are in the noise range.

Ditto that. The honest/real climate scientists say we are heading into a long term global cooling cycle. One reason why all the current hyper frenzied propaganda effects to cram in climate change crap before that cannot be hidden.

In answer to the article: Yes, occasionally severe cold winter snaps can be linked to Texas power and natural gas supply issues. These snaps can be expected to occur in other states and in Texas yet again at various times in the future...(said in a tired NPR news announcer voice...with a hint of sarcasm)
