President Biden failed to convince a key Democratic senator to support his $3.5 trillion spending plan during an Oval Office pow-wow, a report said Thursday.

Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia remained firm in his opposition to any budget that costs more than $1.5 trillion, according to Axios.

Biden reportedly tried to persuade Manchin that his opposition to the larger spending measure could endanger a separate $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill that is currently awaiting a vote in the House, to no avail.

Despite the vast gulf between Biden and Manchin, Axios reported the meeting was cordial and the two agreed to keep talking.

“Sen. Manchin is an important partner,” said Andrew Bates, deputy White House press secretary, according to the outlet. “We do not discuss the contents of private meetings.”…

Well the idea that they’re going to keep talking just means the deal isn’t done yet .....Manchin wants more than was offered.

They’ll find Manchin’s price before too long.

Cost alone is sufficient reason to aggressively oppose the bill.
Get it down to a reasonable fraction of the economy (>15% of GDP isn’t reasonable, especially when borrowing half of it with no plan to repay) and THEN we can be against it for more specific reasons.

Wish he were against something besides the cost.

Manchin staked out his position on Sunday. It’s more than $$$. It includes no money for Green New Deal, and work requirements for child tax credits. He’s willing to see the Infastructure Bill get voted down in the process.

Great if true. Just sent him a letter today asking him to vote no. I would encourage all freepers to do the same. Letters are more impactfull than e-mails.

Not that I trust Manchin, nor even like him, but I hope Biden, Schumer, and Pelosi lean on him so hard he switches parties. Now that would put a turd in the punch bowl.

So biden summons Manchin into the oval orifice to persuade him to reconcile the differences. I wonder if he fashioned his methods based on the Johnny Fontain story?

Lol... I was hoping this would happen. He probably left shaking his head saying “This guy is an idiot and should not even be president”.

What a Charley Foxtrot!

Watching Republicans depending on some corruptible RAT from a state dependent upon Federal welfare to help stop a RAT vote-buying giveaway.

Ya just can’t make this crap up.

LOL!!

Or they just might have had the meeting to work out the choreography for a 3.1 Tr “bare bones” deal.

Anyone in the country who is paying attention knows that Biden is severely compromised - and those in Washington know better than most.

I still have hopes for Manchin.
