Smith & Wesson to Relocate Headquarters to Tennessee

Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. (NASDAQ Global Select: SWBI), one of the nation's oldest firearms manufacturers, announced today that it is moving its headquarters and significant elements of its operations to Maryville, Tennessee in 2023. Smith & Wesson has been based in Springfield, Massachusetts since the company was incorporated in 1852.

Mark Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer, said "This has been an extremely difficult and emotional decision for us, but after an exhaustive and thorough analysis, for the continued health and strength of our iconic company, we feel that we have been left with no other alternative." He specifically cited legislation recently proposed in Massachusetts that, if enacted, would prohibit the company from manufacturing certain firearms in the state. "These bills would prevent Smith & Wesson from manufacturing firearms that are legal in almost every state in America and that are safely used by tens of millions of law-abiding citizens every day exercising their Constitutional 2nd Amendment rights, protecting themselves and their families, and enjoying the shooting sports. While we are hopeful that this arbitrary and damaging legislation will be defeated in this session, these products made up over 60% of our revenue last year, and the unfortunate likelihood that such restrictions would be raised again led to a review of the best path forward for Smith & Wesson."

Smith indicated that the company vetted a number of cities and states and, after careful consideration, made the decision to relocate 750 jobs and its headquarters to Maryville, Tennessee. The key factors in the decision included the following:

Support for the 2nd Amendment

Business friendly environment

Quality of life for employees

Cost of living and affordability

Access to higher education institutions

Availability of qualified labor for its operations and headquarter functions

Favorable location for efficiency of distribution

Smith continued, "The...

I left Massachusetts 15 months ago and moved down here to rural central Tennessee. I am one of the founders of a growing active political group in our county, and have met many people who have moved down here from other blue states.

Sadly, our bigger cities Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville are largely Democrat. But I can also say that there are many, many transplants from other blue states who are seriously pissed off conservatives.

My political group is collaborating with conservative political action groups from other counties, and I can tell you that we are seeing a serious conservative movement down here, with growing pushback against our RINO state reps and senators and our RINO governor Lee.

I just picked up a S&W 559 and am happy with the way it handles. It is my first 9mm and the 14 round magazine is also a plus.

Shotguns are not generally considered the big evil firearm, especially hunting models. S&W makes a line of AR-15 type rifles now

A Smith & Wesson® like no other… The newest of new in the M&P® lineup, the Smith & Wesson M&P12 Bullpup Shotgun. Close your eyes and imagine your tried-and-true pump action shotgun, then imagine the space gun of your dreams and put them together… Et Voila! The dual pistol grip, 12 Gauge, dual magazine tube fed shotgun you could have only ever dreamed of.

That is a nice shotgun, but is it an assault shotgun? Maybe.
I just seem to hear the rabid anti-gunners bitching the most about so-called “assault rifles” like the AR and AK platforms.

I can see that M&P shotgun getting getting anti-gunners panties in a wad because it looks "evil".

Remember the '94 "assault weapon" ban was mostly cosmetic in nature.

To: alternatives?

Semi-the final assemblyweapons are the target of legislation in many states. S&W makes some very good semi-auto handguns and their own versions of the AR platform. Springfield is keeping the revolvers because they aren’t yet targeted by the state legislature in MA. I stopped by once when traveling through Springfield and got a 3 hour tour of the factory along with two others. We saw everything from receiving of steel blanks, to forging, to machining to final assembly. We got to watch the final assembly and fitment of a 6” 686 and test fired it.

I had the exact model in my safe and still have it today, 28 years later.

The States that are red need to institute a fee for support of the Second amendment for new people moving in. Say $2,500 to support freedom.

Surprised it took them this long...

Only a Matter of time before MA makes it next to impossible to manufacture a gun there....
