Reactions roll in on Florida’s $10 minimum wage
The Capitolist ^ | September 30th 2021 | Jordan Kirkland

Posted on 10/03/2021 12:13:35 PM PDT by Jacquerie

Florida’s first incremental increase in the minimum wage went into effect on Thursday, increasing from $8.65 per hour minimum to $10 per hour.

The first in a series of wage hike increases come after Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment backed by Orlando TV attorney John Morgan. The measure was approved via a supermajority vote of 60.8 percent last election cycle, with more than 6.3 million Floridians say they favor a $15 hour minimum wage hike.

Today marked the first step in that process, with the state’s minimum wage set to increase by $1 each year on September 30th, until 2027, when there would be an annual adjustment to the state minimum wage based on increases to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.

“We believe wages should be determined by the market, not politics, and that’s clearly what’s been happening as Florida’s economy has opened up. The latest NFIB jobs survey shows a staggering 50% of small businesses nationwide have openings they can’t fill, and while Florida’s minimum is jumping to $10 an hour, our survey shows that 41% of owners nationwide have already begun paying more while another 26% plan to raise wages in the next three months,” said NFIB State Executive Director Bill Herrle.

“Of course, that money has to come from someplace. Raising the starting wage will increase the financial pressure on small businesses that are struggling to get through the pandemic and could end up hurting workers as employers simply try to get by with fewer workers to offset the overall increase in labor costs. “It remains to be seen whether raising the minimum wage will affect Florida’s labor shortage. Our jobs survey showed that 91% of small businesses nationwide with positions to fill had few if any qualified applicants.”

So what the hell is a job good for if you can't even live or survive on it? Are they all supposed to live in their cars or with someone else who pays all the bills?

So what I guess they are advocating is going back to chattel slavery.

Working at the min wage for a small business owners at the age of 16 teaches you that work doesn’t pay and to hate the capitalist system. It’s how we produce life long Democrats.

Double their pay. Then watch as all prices double. Rinse, repeat.

You actually think doubling wages doubles the price of the goods and services they produce? Are you really THAT stoooooooooopid?

Ask what the Farmer gets per hour after he sends the “meat” to the slaughter house?

Maybe they should learn to code.

Minimum Wage = Starting Wage.

The Minimum Wage should be Zero, unless someone puts a Gun to your Head and makes you take it.

My Father told me at a very young age that nobody owes you a living.

I have always heeded his advice, which is why I NEVER thought any Job I held was guaranteed as well as the amount I was being paid to do it.

I also saved 10% of every dollar I made throughout my entire working career even if I only made a dollar. Another bit of advice given to me at a young age.

I am not nor have I ever been a cheap labor express whore, if that was what you just implied. Notice that I am not insulting you my FRiend, so I expect the same from you.

So? Rising wages is good thing.

Not arguing. As a minimum wage worker in the 1970's, it was a good thing for me. Just noting the wage-push inflation. It means inflation is not just a temporary post-pandemic rebound, but real and permanent.

Wage inflation is always under control now because unions are really a non factor in today’s post industrial/post union society.

Right, minimum Wage = Fake job, one you cannot survive on, pay bills, rent etc. If you’re lucky you can get someone else to pay for most everything. I get it. All those older folks working at hardware stores, fast food slop joints are probably losers. Someone should tell them those jobs are for teenagers!

Are you trying to put words in my mouth?

Disagree with my opinion, fine and dandy. Don’t make crap up and try to apply it to me.

Oh, they’re my comments based on what others, not necessarily you, have said here dozens of times.

My point is, some people fail to understand all work is honorable...And if they’re in business but can’t pay enough for someone to at least survive on, they probably should not be in business.

......”if they’re in business but can’t pay enough for someone to at least survive on they probably should not be in business.”......

That’s just nonsense. There’s plenty of jobs never intended for people to make a living at ......start up positions are to gain the experience needed to work ahead and forward your goals. If you don’t like the wages then move onto something where you do.

Wait, I said if they can't pay enough for someone to *survive* on, they probably shouldn't be in business. By survive I mean the bare bone basics stuff, like pay rent, utilities and food and maybe enough to buy gas to get to work. Is this not reasonable?
