NYC to phase out Gifted and Talented program
New York Post ^ | October 8, 2021 | Selim Algar, Lee Brown and Carl Campanile

Mayor Bill de Blasio is phasing out New York City’s Gifted and Talented program, he announced Friday — bowing to critics who complain that the coveted model is racist.

Current students in the program will be able to stay in accelerated-learning classes to completion. But new cohorts they will be completely eliminated by fall 2022, ending the current testing for 4-year-old city kids.

“The era of judging four-year-olds based on a single test is over,” de Blasio said Friday.

It is being replaced by Brilliant NYC, a program offering students aged 8 and up chances for accelerated learning — while staying in their regular classrooms with other pupils.

De Blasio announced the major overhaul despite being in the final months of his term in office.

The candidates to replace him, Democrat Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa, have both made clear they did not want to completely eliminate the program, which critics have attacked in part because of the higher number of white and Asian students that pass the tests.

“Brilliant NYC will deliver accelerated instruction for tens of thousands of children, as opposed to a select few,” de Blasio said.

“Every New York City child deserves to reach their full potential, and this new, equitable model gives them that chance.”

But critics quickly ripped Hizzoner for making the decision so late in his administration after earlier calls for him to leave it to his successor.

“Gifted and talented programs have been an integral option for generations of schoolkids,” tweeted Sen. John Liu (D-Queens), who chairs a panel on New York City schools.

“@BilldeBlasio promised intensive public engagement about it but now wants total elimination.

“This won’t help his abysmal record. If anything, his legacy will be revocation of mayoral control,” said Liu.

I believe welfare, with its breakup of black families is the main cause.

The other trick the system uses is to emply the gifted ones to teach the slower ones, while teach handles the easier average ones.

Deliberate waste of talent. Mendacious mediocrity.

Post of the thread. Self esteem most important. The precise result of not keeping score and participation trophies.

-- Black culture in America has been the downfall of blacks ... --

I think so too, and it's been enabled and reinforced all around.

"Acting white" is a thing. So is "thug culture." These are cultural norms.

Act out, get called on it, and blame the critic.

After all of the sane folks bail out of New York and California, will the millions of illegal immigrants gravitate toward those two states, to live in welfare nirvana

Add Florida. That is where all the Haitians are moving along with illegals. I have been reading articles entire neighborhoods and cities are being overrun enmass.

“The gifted and talented need to move somewhere where they are treated with respect and honored for their talents.”

The Democratic Socialists have a plan: They are going to tax the white gifted and talented students.

I would like to see the arguments for testing four year olds and most especially the data to suggest that such tests are valid and reliable for four year olds.
Almost by definition you are testing for parental involvement. I am not opposed to such streaming in principle, just questioning its validity.

As for apparent differences in IQ by race, IMO, the reasons do need to be debated as do cut off scores since environmental factors do significantly impact scores.

New York City politicians such as Kaiser Wilhelm Deblasio claim “fairness”, but just like “defund the police”, the truth is New York City is broke and can’t afford skilled teachers for the Gifted & Talented program any more than it can afford to pay cops.

Classic. Blacks and Latinos can’t keep up? Lower the bar. This is how civilizations die.

Classic Dimmocommie strategy. If blacks & Latinos can't keep up in any sort of academics, or any sort of requirement at all, Dimmocommies simply remove the requirements instead of urging greater effort to achieve them. They really want a population of dumbed down drones who will not question their insane policies because they are incapable of doing so. They are patently EVIL.

I’ve known two truly gifted kids. Both were homeschooled. One graduated high school at 12. He’s brilliant but has the street smarts of a rock. Dumb as a brick.

The other had her Bachelors at 17.

Any teacher knows that it only takes 1 or 2 disruptive students to destroy any learning opportunities for the rest of the class. While the academically gifted students are forced to sit in regular classrooms with the typically disruptive and misbehaving kids totally uninterested in learning (why should they, when they are guaranteed an income of welfare and social programs?), how much "accelerated learning" do you think they will be able to accomplish? There was a very good reason why the academically "elite" schools in NYC, such as Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Townsend Harris in Queens, etc. had signs posted all along the wall in hallways which said "Quiet! Learning going on!" There were no marauding class cutters wandering the halls, peering into classrooms to see if they could get students near the door to pay attention to them instead of the lesson. You could have heard a pin drop in the halls. Everyone inside those classrooms was actively engaged in high level discussions instead of playing with their cell phone or asking constantly for the hall pass. The kids were an absolute dream to work with; you could have an adult discussion with them. You had to watch everything you said with the regular kids, as their limited vocabularies caused them to take everything the wrong way or leave them in the dark. They were too unmotivated to even ask questions to clear up misunderstandings.

Without the program, my immigrant nephew would not have attended the public Stuyvesant High School, would not have gotten the advanced science education he got there, and may not have become the Columbia School of Engineering graduate that boosted his professional opportunities and experience. Like many kids at the time, only such a great public school was affordable to his single parent family, and only a school with Stuyvesant’s advanced math and science courses was going to give him the best education possible.

What is Di Blasio really attacking? He’s attacking merit and excellence. They are symbols of “white supremacy” don’t you know - /sarc. P.S., my nephew is considered Asian, not “white”.

DeB’s position is that equity is all — especially if it punishes those uppity folk who might grow up to call him on his crappola. Sustaining his position of superiority depends upon oppressing everyone.
