President Joe Biden is expected to announce the Port of Los Angeles will begin operating 24 hours a day, a push from the White House to clear supply chain disruptions that are threatening holiday shopping season plans and slowing the nation’s economic recovery from the pandemic, according to media reports.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting Biden is scheduled to make the announcement Wednesday. A similar plan is in effect at the Port of Long Beach. The two ports are responsible for nearly half of all imports into the United States.

Under the proposed plan, the Port of Los Angeles will nearly double the number of hours that cargo is transferred from container ships offshore to delivery trucks on the nation’s highways. The crews will work through the night. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union members will fill the extra shifts, the L.A. Times is reporting.

Major shippers and retailers, including Walmart, FedEx, UPS, Samsung, Home Depot and Target, have agreed to speed up operations to clear cargo out of the ports and free up more space on the docks, the L.A. Times reports.

The goal is to process and unload 3,500 extra containers during the night each week.

Biden’s announcement is scheduled to be made during a virtual conference that includes industry executives such as Los Angeles Port executive director Gene Seroka and Long Beach Port executive director Mario Cordero.

Cargo ships have been anchored offshore from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles for weeks. There were 58 container ships reported offshore as of Tuesday morning. That is down from a reported peak of 73 container ships offshore two weeks ago.

Why weren’t the ships unloaded in recent weeks in the first place?

Won’t matter one damn bit if there aren’t trucks and trains removing the containers.
And California has made it hard as hell to operate trucks there, esp. for owner-operators.

Yea, after some major damage has been done. Please, Lord, get rid of these evil schemers in leadership. Thank You, In the Name of Jesus, Amen

Um...wouldn’t you have to hire more workers to do that?

with the labor shortage and forced jabs that may be a problem

I was wondering that too

Why aren’t these ports already doing this with such a backlog?

This is not a proper matter for a potus to be announcing. The Los Angeles harbor commission ( part of the city government) manages the port. It has plenty of staff capable of us dining a press release. Plenty

What an amazing coincidence this started happening after conservative commentators started talking about how well President Trump would have handled this. I think it was Chris Plante who said he could even see Trump on the dock directing operations with a bullhorn. :)

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union members will fill the extra shifts, the L.A. Times is reporting.

At time and a half, or double time the poor things.

Why didn’t he do it in July when it was getting bad? What they do is create a problem, then once it explodes, they come to the rescue. Only the rescue involves giving up god given rights to government control. We’ll see if this makes a difference, but it should have been implemented months ago when it could have avoided all this mess. Next it will be inflation in the 10-15% range, they he will say he’s decided we need to raise interest rates. Again, way too late to have the needed impact. This is stagflation and it will be years before we get out of it, if at all. In the meantime the middle class will be completely destroyed, leaving only the elite and unwashed masses.
