Shipping companies at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will soon be fined if their containers stay in marine terminals for too long, officials announced on Monday.

Officials at San Pedro Bay Ports said in a statement that the fines are being imposed in an effort to “improve cargo movement amid congestion and record volume.”

Starting on Nov. 1, the ports will charge shipping companies that fall into one of two categories: containers scheduled to move by truck and containers moving by rail.

Because extra shipping costs like fines are never passed down to the consumer... oh wait!

Maybe I'm wrong but the shipping companies are as much a victim in all this as we are. Government is to blame for 99% of the problems because of their lockdown and clot shot mandates. Fine the politicians.

And these fines will just be passed along to the recipient of the cargo as “handling fees.”

The shipping lines and/or terminal operators already impose surcharges for containers that aren't picked up in a timely manner.

A contract between a customer and a shipping line typically includes a provision where an imported container has X days of "free time" in the terminal before it must be picked up. This used to be 7-10 days at most ports in the past, but has gotten more compressed in recent years. I think a standard free time period is about 4 days for most customers. After that period expires, the customer pays a demurrage charge for each day the container is still in the terminal.

Hey ships, avoid fines, take your goods to Florida where they will be welcome.

Do not even hope that logic or sanity will be applied to unsnarling the logjam and general chaos that now exist at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Somebody gonna pay, and they better be putting up the cash, up front, or there will be - consequences.

Only, who is left to enforce them? Don’t everybody head for the door at once.

Government is to blame for 99% of the problems

Correction : California government is responsible for the problems in their entirety ; no owner-operator trucks permitted on docks, only company trucks newer than 2011 meeting CA EPA regs allowed, others.

Problems associated with JIT supply chain : lack of warehouse workers to unload freight, lack of warehouse workers causing rail freight back ups and loss of rail business - no place to store full cars not able to be unloaded, others.

Good one. Make it extremely difficult to get containers moving and then fine the companies because they can’t get their containers out fast enough The left have a lot of snakes in their heads.

Isn’t that akin to placing a surcharge on my purchases for waiting in the grocery checkout line too long because the store hasn’t enough checkers?

I wish that comment was sarcasm (it’s valid equivalency).

Ships should just go to FL or TX. Goods can be shipped from there. Curious about OR and WA as well. Wonder if those states have the same trucking restrictions as CA.......yet.

How’s that work?
1) Put trucks/Truckers out of business via insane green laws.
2) No Trucks to carry off off loaded containers.
3) Fine container ships for WAITING because they can’t get off loaded.
Please add on to as required:-)

You’re right and wrong

Shipping companies are likely victims as well

Costs imposed by govt etc are not uniformly passed on except in monopolies

Free will nixes that

It’s a common fallacy of economics 101 that you snap yours fingers and viola the consumer absorbs any cost hike

I wish

Someone will ALWAYS under cut or eat then you all do
