Return to the days of the Wild West would not suit Nevada, or any state (barf alert)

--(snip)

"But while Nevada may not see many changes based on the Supreme Court case, we don’t have to look far to see the dangerous ramifications of sacrificing public safety on the altar of unregulated gun rights. Our next-door neighbor, Idaho, is among the worst in the nation in gun safety — a problem that was tragically illustrated when a gunman killed two innocent people at a Boise shopping mall on Oct. 25 before dying in a shootout with police.

The shooter was a convicted felon who was known to law enforcement. He’d been flagged by Idaho State Police on suspicion of illegally possessing firearms, and he’d had run-ins with police in Boise and the nearby town of Meridian while armed.

But as pointed out in a column by Scott McIntosh, the Idaho Statesman’s opinion editor, the shooter could legally own and carry weapons in Idaho despite his felony record. That’s because Idaho’s lax gun laws allow for gun ownership by individuals convicted of certain types of felonies, and the shooter’s 2012 conviction of theft was among them.

Could someone in Idaho please remind me where the mass shootings occurred at a Country music concert, because folks in Nevada can’t recall.

The Sun didn't do much in the way of research on this one before opening their yaps. If they had, they'd have discovered that Idaho is tied for fourth place with Rhode Island for lowest murder rates in the country. Nevada is 48th out of 50. SOURCE. This "reporter" should have concluded that a little laxity might just be in order here.

It would be interesting to see a racial breakdown of those murders.

Nevada is 48th out of 50.

I suspect that a well established heavy mafia presence, legalized prostitution and gambling, and general drinking and party atmosphere in Reno and Vegas have more to do with that.

The big question is, why is this newspaper still in business?? Thankfully, like most newspapers in America, it is dying. The Nevada Sun won’t be around much longer to print this type of drivel.

R.A. Heinlein would agree.

“...a gunman killed two innocent people at a Boise shopping mall”

And he could have killed them just as dead had he used black powder cap and ball revolvers and been perfectly entitled to own them by Federal law.

But Nevada is pointing at Idaho after two are murdered? Wasn’t there a shooting in Las Vegas not that long ago that resulted in a lot more deaths? A guy managed to bring up loads of weapons and ammo into a casino hotel without being captured on camera. You know, one of those “we’ll never know the motivation behind the crime” kind of shootings?

Hey, if you are going to defund the police and you are going to let violent criminals back on the streets, then you have to expect vigilante justice will be an option.

People have a fundamental right to self-defense and personal safety.

Police are to help create a climate of public safety from crimes of all kinds. Once society breaks down to the point of random violence, people have a right to protect themselves.

OK, first of all, which Wild West are we talking about? The one with Robert Conrad, or the one with Will Smith?

I'm voting for the Robert Conrad Wild West.

“... the altar of unregulated gun rights. “

Is that the same as not infringed gun rights ?

Idaho has one of lowest murder rates in the country.

I live in rural, (real rural...3-hour drive to the nearest WalMart) and it is not unusual to see an adult with a open carry firearm on his hip with two kids in tow, pushing a shopping cart in our local market. No one pays any attention. Our last murder in town was 20-years ago and involved a couple of drunk idiots and one was killed by knife.

I lived in Idaho when I was a kid. It was a right of passage to get a .22 at 10.

My Family has been in Idaho since 1880.

But as pointed out by New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, there’s a big difference between making a speech and carrying a gun.

Not the only buffoon around... Dermot Shea has an extremely ignorant view of the potential lethality of a well crafted speech when compared to what one person with a firearm can do. Billions have been killed violently in our history and most of those as a direct result of written or spoken words...

I enjoy reading this blog, ‘American Cowboy Chronicles.’
A fairly wide ranging set of news, history and opinion, they confirm your statement, and even note that the Wild West was tame compared to Eastern cities even in the old days.

"It was a right of passage to get a .22 at 10."

In Louisiana it was 8. I got first lessons in gun safety at 4.
