DeSantis Announces Plan for Immediate Inflation Relief for Floridians: Asks Legislature to Cut Gas Tax to The Tune of $1 Billion

Go Ron go!

Governor Ron DeSantis continues to demonstrate he is for the people of his state, announcing Monday the Republican-dominant Florida legislature will work to suspend the state’s gas tax to help residents combat the ever rising inflation. The suspension will provide a whopping $1 billion in relief to Florida drivers.

DeSantis, speaking at a Buc-ee’s gas station and convenience store in Daytona Beach, blamed “inflationary policies out of Washington” for driving up prices ahead of the holidays.

The Biden administration has created huge inflation with excessive government spending to the tune of 6.2%. Not only has inflation soared under Biden, but his advisors seem to have no answers to stopping it, they actually seem clueless.

Biden’s economic advisor, Brian Deese, actually went on Good Morning America and said the number one thing to help inflation, “We have to finish job on COVID…getting those shots out to 5-11-year-olds is gonna provide a lot of comfort to American families.”

Fortunately for Floridians, Gov DeSantis is taking action to help his constituents find some relief.

“The price of a Thanksgiving dinner is up over 20% just over last year,” DeSantis said. “I think what’s most dramatic, because it affects most people in their daily lives, is gas prices going up.”

DeSantis pointed out that the price of gas today is up a whopping $1.31 over the price a year ago.

“We think this is a huge problem for working families in Florida. Really it hits everybody, but it particularly hits blue-collar people, people on fixed income,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis is asking the state government to provide immediate relief for families by suspending the gas tax until such time as prices come back down.

“The average family over a five or six month period, you know, could save up to $200,” the governor said. “There’s a whole bunch of things that go into the price of gas. There’s different taxes, federal, state, local level, we’re taking over 25 cents from Florida and we will basically zero that out for as long as we can and do over a billion dollars. That’s going to make a huge, huge deal.”

DeSantis stated he spoke with state business leaders in the state to ensure that if the tax alleviation passes, there will be lower prices at the pump.

“We talked [to] Racetrack, we talked to Daily’s, Gate, a bunch of them throughout the state of Florida, and they all said yes, absolutely [we will lower prices]. And I think the reason is it makes financial sense for them because they make a lot of money when people come into their store and buy things,” DeSantis said.

He added that state budget surpluses have put Florida in “great financial shape” and told reporters that suspending the gas tax will not hamper state infrastructure spending.

This guy should be in the WH.
If Trump is the nominee, he should pick DeSantis as his VP. Then DeSantis could run in 2028 for Pres.

Yeah, might as well. Hopefully, he has discretion to take all those obnoxious environ-MENTAL funds and re-direct them into roads, airports, broadband, etc. — that is, actual infrastructure that benefits most people, rather than just smug elites who want us all driving ‘sploding electric cars.

Given how against the bill Republicans were he should probably refuse any of the funds. But he's not going to do that. He'll accept the money and then run on all the infrastructure improvements that have been completed during his administration.

On the short list of candidates to nominate for POTUS in ‘24 if Trump gets grassy-knolled. On the very short list of candidates for POTUS in ‘28, if Trump does survive his second term.

Florida Gov DeSantis signs bill limiting vaccine mandates [location of bill signing ceremony BRANDON, FL]

Private businesses in Florida will be forced to let workers opt out of coronavirus vaccine mandates after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a sweeping legislative package to combat federal requirements

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Private businesses in Florida will be forced to let workers opt out of coronavirus vaccine mandates after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a sweeping legislative package Thursday to combat White House virus rules.

DeSantis, a Republican, signed the bills into law at a ceremony alongside leaders of the GOP-controlled statehouse and other state officials who said they were protecting people from burdensome federal vaccination requirements.

“We’re making sure that people have a right to earn a living, people have a right to have protections in their place of employment and that parents have protections to be able to direct the upbringing of their kids,” DeSantis said to cheers.

The signing ceremony closed a three-day special legislative session called by DeSantis as he continues a campaign against vaccine mandates pushed by the White House. The governor, who is running for reelection and eyeing a potential 2024 presidential run, has become one of the nation’s most prominent Republicans through his opposition to lockdowns and other virus rules.

The new law prevents businesses from having vaccine mandates unless they allow workers to opt out for medical reasons, religious beliefs, immunity based on a previous infection, regular testing or an agreement to wear protective gear. The state health department, which is led by Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, who opposes mandates, will have authority to define exemption standards.

“It completely pushes back against this belief that some of our leadership has been trying to put forward, that you don’t control your body, that your body belongs to Doctor Fauci, and he gets to decide what you do with your body, what you put on your face, what your kids get to do,” Ladapo said of the legislation.

The bill also includes fines for businesses that fire a worker without allowing the exemptions. Additionally, it bars schools and governments from having vaccine mandates and allows parents to sue schools with masking requirements. A separate bill blocks the public release of records regarding state investigations of vaccine policies in businesses.

Democrats have criticized the bills as politically motivated and dangerous to public health.

“Laissez-faire epidemiology and outright disinformation have contributed to Florida’s horrific death toll, and it’s shameful that some choose to politicize an epidemic for their own ambition,” said Rep. Evan Jenne, a Democrat.

Another bill signed by DeSantis prevents the state health officer from being able to mandate vaccines during a public health emergency. He also approved a bill directing the state to begin considering a withdrawal from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which drafted White House vaccine requirements for private businesses with more than 100 employees.

******The location of the bill signing ceremony itself represented another jab at Biden. DeSantis held the event at a car dealership in the small Tampa suburb of Brandon, a reference to the chants of “Let’s go Brandon” that have become a coded stand-in for “F—- Joe Biden” among conservatives. The governor smiled when asked if the location was a move to troll the president, saying “I think that Brandon, Florida is a great American city” as a crowd of about 250 supporters chanted “Let’s go Brandon.”*****

The new legislation, which passed easily in the statehouse, came as the state simultaneously wages legal battles against federal vaccine mandates. Florida has sued the White House over a requirement that federal contractors be vaccinated against COVID-19 and over the vaccine mandate for businesses. This week, the state filed another suit in an attempt to block a COVID-19 vaccine requirement for health care workers.

In a statement after the bills were signed, Rep. Geraldine Thompson, a Democrat, said the legislation was meant to serve the governor’s possible political ambitions.

“Businesses are trying to survive during the ongoing pandemic and the governor, with the support of the Republican legislature, is hampering their operations,” she said. “The bills from the special session are anti-business and engaged legislators as extras in the governor’s sideshow to boost his profile as he hopes to become president.”

“I think his ‘rainy day fund’ is the infrastructure bill that was just passed. Florida gets a sizeable chunk of that.”

Not really. The blue states will get most of the money for their pet infrastructure projects. FL won’t get nearly as much. I read FL will get short-changed as compared to other large states.

The gas tax should have been set to a rate necessary to maintain and expandability roads and bridges.

No further increase or decrease should have been necessary.
