Salvation Army red kettle campaign down 50%, two local (GOP) leaders step in to help

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - Donations are down for one local organization but the problem is the need in the community is greater and continues to grow.

The Salvation Army recently held a fundraiser for their annual red kettle campaign to help those in the community who are in need. So far this year's campaign is down about 50% in donations and on top of that, they are struggling to get volunteers.

Tonight at the Clemens Center, two local leaders stepped in to help.

During this time of year, you'll typically see many red kettle volunteers outside ringing the kettlebells asking for donations. Major Stanley Newton with the Salvation Army believes donations are down this year because people are financially stretched compared to last year. He explains many had stimulus checks and unemployment coming in.

"Inflation has killed us this year, gas prices were probably 30% of what they are now, $1 to $2, now it's $3.50. You have COVID resurfacing at a higher level so getting volunteers has been really difficult," Newton said.

He says they had to think outside the box to help draw in donations. So tonight at the Kenny G concert in the Clemens center there were two volunteer guest bell ringers. Chemung County Sheriff Schrom and Chemung County Executive Chris Moss wanted to do their part to help the cause.

Schrom says he is happy to give his time to make Christmas hopefully better for those in need.

"A great cause, easy decision to make so I decided to come out and support the Salvation Army and hopefully raise some money for them," Schrom said.

The Salvation Army says $0.82 of every $1 that's donated stays in the community and goes towards direct services to help the less fortunate. Services such as social services, the food pantry, shelter programs, addiction residences, utility assistance, and rental assistance.

Moss says this is why it's important to donate, no amount is too small.

"If you can give we ask you to give. There are several organizations out there that do great things for the community so you know what, if you give a couple of dollars it's always a good thing whether the money is being spent for meals for toys for children or families so they don't go without especially at holiday time," Moss said.

The red kettle campaign ends on December24th. There are many ways to donate. One way is by texting ELMIRAKETTLE to 41444 or you can contact the Salvation Army directly.

My guess is that the Salvation Army is learning its lesson and is savable. Some years ago, I was surprised to learn that a cynical, strongly charity-skeptical CPA whom I knew well was on the local Salvation Army advisory board. He had done the books of most of the area’s charities and nonprofits and found the Salvation Army to be genuinely dedicated to charitable work due to its unique uniformed, military style leadership and its consciously Christian beliefs. All indications are that the antiwhite racism on recent display in the Salvation Army crept in through aberrant teachings embraced by one or more leaders. If the organization is fundamentally healthy, it will self-correct.

Just as with what we face here with our government, it’s gonna hafta be the guy with the bell....the man in the street.
These kinds of changes can ONLY come from the bottom up!

Take that to mean whatever you want it to mean.

The biggest problem is that by not contributing, and I’m one that stopped years ago, we are playing into the hands of the left. The progressives, socialists, communists, liberals, politicians, whatever, want the elimination of ALL private charity. They’ve said so openly and often. They want ALL largess to come from the government. Unless the rank and file of any and all organizations that these bastards have infiltrated do whatever needs to be done to get rid of them, our nation and the principles it was founded on will be nothing but a memory.

Time to boycott charity aggregators like Salvation Army and Combined Federal Campaign. Give to specific programs that you know are free of diversity officers and anti-white bias.

I will punish the SA this year, by not donating.

Next year, if they don’t do any more woke crap, I will resume donating.

They helped me when I was down.

SA will only “self-correct” if we are ferocious enough in demanding that they correct.

I have always found a massive boycott is the only “communication” these large organizations understand—and even that only works part of the time.

They need to fire most of their top leadership to even begin to deal with the leftist zombie infestation.

For now they are in lie, lie, lie, deny, deny, deny mode.

Absolutely the best way to do it. When I was out of work, my brother helped me in similar fashion. Now, I am helping him.

If you don't have a brother by blood, you can do the same for a fellow church congregant or anyone else. If you don't have a church, ask a friend who does and he or she will put you in touch with someone you can both trust.

I hear you and understand. As others who were in the service, I’m aware of how good the SA has been. But if the leaders of the SA stay, their objectives will only be dormant.... waiting. Remember how HillaryCare “died”......until ObamaCare brought it back to life.....without tana leaves!

So there’s no redemption? No forgiveness?
***********?
First there has to be clear admission of guilt and change of direction. This hasn’t occurred yet — the racial guilt peddlers are still on the job.

I agree. Above all, the key name to watch for departure is Col. Janet Munn, the Salvation Army minister and co-director of the organization’s International Social Justice Commission, which developed the offensive anti-white discussion guide. She no doubt needs to have company when and if she goes. The sleepy Christmas to New Year period is often the preferred time for organizational shake-ups.

They have little motivation to correct when RINOs like Moss and Schrom ride to their rescue to raise funds for them.

Every year, I would drop money into the Salvation Army buckets in any stores I went to. No more. I’ve found a much better charity:

The Church of Christ Disaster Relief Fund.

In September of 2020, my community on the Central Oregon Coast suffered a horrific wildfire, in which 300 families lost their homes. Fortunately, there was no loss of life, due to hurried and reasonably efficient evacuations.

Within days, at my local Church of Christ, a semi truck arrived from Nashville, loaded with every type of item needed: non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, personal care supplies, brand new clothing, sheets, towels, baby items, even tools like wheelbarrows, rakes and shovels. We set up a donation center in the Fellowship Room at my church, and staffed it for nearly three months, giving aid to the burned-out families.

Now, the Church of Christ Disaster Relief Fund is in the Midwest, providing for tornado victims. I feel blessed to be able to donate to them - I’ve seen what they do with my own eyes, and plan to donate in the future.

Take that to mean whatever you want it to mean.Translation: Not going to happen in the land of the sheeple.

Withholding contributions can alter behavior. It won't eliminate the organization. Milton Friedman had it right.

What is important is not the particular person who is elected President or the party he belongs to. I have often said we shall not correct the state of affairs by electing the right people; we’ve tried that. The right people before they’re elected become the wrong people after they’re elected. The important thing is to make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. If it is not politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either.

Your translation is not quite correct.

I said that only to forestall any queries into possible non-political remedies wrt government......and to quote that brilliant philosopher, Forrest Gump, “And that’s all I’m going to say about that” 🙃

Taking down a video, altering a web site, offering a non-apology apology all mean nothing. So long as they have an International Social Justice Commission and the officers on that commission as well as those that conceived it remain in the Army, their thinking hasn’t changed.

The only thing they feel bad about is getting caught and the resulting backlash. They will use the passive aggressive tactic of tugging at heartstrings to instill guilt in their former givers, but it is all so very self-serving.

These officers are leftists. They are insidious. They must be removed.
