Dean Weingarten: My Everyday Carry Guns
AmmoLand ^ | December 30, 2021 | Dean Weingarten

The author really likes his Glock and lightweight revolver.

U.S.A.-(AmmoLand.com)- My everyday carry is a Glock 17 in a Fobus retention holster. It was fitted with Glock factory tritium night sights when refurbished by a Glock armorer a few years ago. A spare magazine is carried in a narrow pants pocket. The ammunition is 115 grain Triton +P 9mm hollowpoints. When a need for more concealment than easily achieved with the Fobus arises,  the deeper concealment pistol is a Smith & Wesson 337 Scandium revolver with a 3 1/8 inch barrel, adjustable sights, and Crimson Trace grips. Various holsters and concealment methods are used. It is rated for .38 Special +P loads. It is loaded with 125 grain Federal +P Nyclad hollowpoints. Spare ammunition is carried in two HKS speedloaders.

The subject of everyday carry necessarily starts with a clear understanding of what the objective of carrying the firearm is.  This is a highly personal decision, with numerous purposes and combinations. Each person needs to consider their own objectives, risks, benefits, the environments they will be in, and choose accordingly.

For this correspondent, the primary objective is political, with a secondary objective of defense of self and others, dominated by deterrence over tactical surprise.

I ordinarily carry openly. Open carry is more politically effective than concealed carry. The two methods complement and reinforce each other. Both have advantages and disadvantages. I have often practiced both at the same time.

Open carry is an effective statement the carrier has Second Amendment rights. Those rights limit what the government can do. The carrier is not afraid to assert those

Too much passive voice in the narrative.

A pair just as good as most.

Far more important to have a fire arm that works then the style or caliber.

That’s only after 5 rounds have gone down-range.

Where those things are concerned, I’m all thumbs.

Well, I’m sure he’s well practiced. Sounds like it would be a fairly low-risk environment where he carried only that weapon. Might not be much fun trying to recharge a revolver with only one hand working, either.

Even though I live near a small, conservative town and rarely travel I changed my carry weapon and my truck gun in 2020 in response to Antifa and BLM.

Prior to the change I carried a Glock 36 45ACP with extended mags (8+1). My Truck gun (holster behind the console) was a Ruger Security Six .357.

I now carry an FN FiveseveN (20+1) with 2 spare mags. My Truck gun is a KelTec PMR 30 30+1 and one extra mag. I can fire 52 rounds without changing a magazine and carry 120 total, except on the Harley where it's just the FN.

How one carries a firearm is a highly personal decision. When we traveled to New Orleans from Illinois last year open carry was the only option available to me. Illinois CCLs are not valid in Louisiana and they will not issue LA permits to non residents.

We stayed at a VRBO in the Lower Ninth and there was no way I was going about unarmed there. So I used the only option I could, legally speaking. I carried a Springfield XDS in .45 in a retention holster plainly displayed on my strong side.

I’ve grown very tired of the concealed vs open carry argument. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Neither is perfect. Nothing in this world is.

So rather than engaging in snarky criticism over another persons choice we should be supporting each other in how we choose to exercise a fundamental God given Civil Right.

If you need more than five of six rounds in an unplanned firefight you’ve probably already lost. One or two rounds against a violent perp will kill him or send him fleeing.

My carry philosophy also. Avoid a firefight at all costs, unless I'm carrying a rifle...

True dat. I'm back to concealed carry now. However, during Mask Nazism I openly carried. That shutdown the confrontations.

Conceal or not concealed, do what make you most comfortable is my philosophy. I like the idea of open carry to keep the Karen’s and their testosterone challenged counterparts out of your face.

Maybe we all should open carry whenever possible each time we know we’re going to encounter the woke Marxists? Consider it our duty to annoy the wokesters at every opportunity. Rules for Radicals #9. #’s 4 & 8 are ones we need to employ on them too.

Simple fix. Don’t waste all your shots as “warning shots”.

Warning shots are only used in Hollywood. They were forbidden in my day.

For a practiced shooter, a revolver can be reloaded as quickly as a magazine-fed semi-auto, IMO. Watch Jerry Miculek and his SW 625..
