Democrats up for reelection propose suspending federal gas tax through end of 2022

Two Senate Democrats up for reelection proposed a bill on Wednesday to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax through the end of 2022, as millions of Americans grapple with the economic impacts of surging oil prices.

The Gas Prices Relief Act from Sens. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., and Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., would suspend the $18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax through Jan. 1, 2023, according to a summary of the proposal shared with ABC News.

The senators, who are both on the ballot in November, released the proposal at a time when gas is roughly $3.45 a gallon nationwide, about $1 more expensive than a year ago, according to AAA.

"Arizonans are paying some of the highest prices for gas we have seen in years and it's putting a strain on families who need to fill up the tank to get to work and school," Kelly said in a statement."This bill will lower gas prices by suspending the federal gas tax through the end of the year to help Arizona families struggling with high costs for everything from gas to groceries."

"We need to continue to think creatively about how we can find new ways to bring down costs, and this bill would do exactly that, making a tangible difference for workers and families," Hassan said in a statement.

At least four other Democrats, Sens. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen of Nevada, and Raphael Warnock of Georgia have already signed on as co-sponsors of the measure. (Cortez Masto and Warnock, like Hassan and Kelly, are up for reelection in the fall.)

Geez. If someone could just figure out another way to lower petro prices. I wonder what that could be? So, when this proposal expires in 2023 I guess folks would be more likely to afford the re-imposed taxes? NOT! The prices will still rise and then we'll get smacked with adding back the fed tax on top. But hey, if it helps them get reSelected.............. Kinda like the govs dropping mask mandates. I see my two useless senators jumped right on this. Grrrrrrrr! Then again, I knew they would never represent me so no shock.

Friends don’t let friends vote RAT...
They lie, steal, cheat, do whatever to stay in power....all to our demise. The RAT party should be declared a communist domestic terrorist organization and outlawed within the boundaries of the USA.

What the Republicans WILL SAY in response:

“Duh, good idea, save people money in these tough times. Wish we thought of it.”

What the Republicans SHOULD SAY in response (if they played by Democrat rules):

“The Democrats WANT TO KILL PEOPLE on collapsed bridges, due to gutting the funding to repair our highways and bridges.”

" to continue to think creatively about how we can find new ways to bring down costs, undo the damage that this administration has inflicted, and this bill would do exactly that, "

There. Fixed that.

Anybody remember Bob Dole celebrating the 3cent/gallon tax relief in the ‘96 election? Didn’t help much. Raise the bar. Extend it past 2024 or end it permanently.

The Democrats are the ones who implement taxes like these and then when the time is right for them, they suspend them. This is typical: Government creates the problem and then offers the solution.

The colonists, though, opposed the tax on a matter of principle, not financial cost, so they refused to comply.

We need to take a look at the history of the tea party.

“... end it permanently...” how will petee fix our roads and bridges and racis’ highways then? He won’t declare victory and equity until every street and road is named MLK blvd. Or G Floyd expressway.

LOL! Obvious pandering. Are any voters stupid enough to think prices won’t go right back up as soon as these two are back in office?

Rising prices are the obvious consequence when you do all you can to crush the energy industry.

The thing that Hassan is concerned about is not just gasoline/diesel prices.
Here in NH there are still a large percentage of people(like ME) that use heating oil to fire their home furnace. Heating oil tends to mirror the price of diesel. It is basically the same thing without the colored dye in it.

There is very little natural gas available in NH. There are only a couple pipelines that primarily serve the cities.
So, out in the country your choice is either heating oil or propane. In addition I have a Harman pellet stove insert I installed 9 years ago. Many people have wood stoves and even wood furnaces.

$3.70/gal in PA. I remember it was less than half that when Trump was president.

My guess is that this is also meant to create a political football. They will hone in on Republicans resistant to suspending the gas tax and make it their campaign slogan.

Smart Republicans should call their bluff and raise the stakes to a permanent suspension. Put the Dems on the defense.
