Lawmakers reject Russian official's request to return Alaska: 'Never, ever, ever'

Russian parliament member Oleg Matveychev on a TV program addressed waves of sanctions against Russia in response to the country’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, saying leaders should “think about reparations.”

“The harm these sanctions caused us cost money. Return of possessions, including possessions of the Russian Empire, Soviet Union and even parts of Russia that are now occupied by the United States,” Matveychev said on Sunday, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

The host of the show asked Matveychev about the return of Alaska and Fort Ross, which was established by Russians in California, according to the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

“This is my next point – recognizing Alaska, Fort Ross and Antarctica,” Matveychev responded, according to the Anchorage Daily News. “We actually discovered it, so it rightfully belongs to us.”

The United States reached an agreement to purchase Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867. Alaska was admitted as a state in 1959.

Republican Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski balked at the statement, tweeting coverage of the comments and a gif of Taylor Swift with the caption “That will never, ever, ever happen!”

Why not Lisa?

Seriously, at this point considering the damage you've done, why not claim it is theirs and vote to give it back?

Ask them for $100 million in small bills/multiple currencies to arrive via ski plane in your back 400.

They'll pay it fool.

Why not offer them LA County instead—and throw in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Marin, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties as well?

Compromise. Isolate the San Francisco bay area, and give it to Russia with all of the inhabitants of San Francisco, Oakland, Berkely, and Silicon Valley.

The Russians at least have a real claim.

They also respected the sale when they made it, something the Mexicans didn’t.

We won a war with Mexico and then paid them for the land, which they didn’t own anyway. Just because the King of Spain says he owns an entire hemisphere doesn’t make it true.

And then they barged in and now say they have a right to live here. Wait, what? Your ancestors sold it to us. How bout honoring the deal? We owe you nothing, certainly not a place to live.

No Russians trying to occupy Anchorage with illegal immigration. Or Fort Ross.

Alaska was bought and paid for. Paid in full. It’s not our fault that neither of us knew what it was really worth at the time (Seward’s Folly).

Redentivists take note: Imperial Russia included northern California, most of Poland, a big chunk of Romania, Finland, and a chunk of Persia, in addition to Alaska and of course the various “near republics” of the Soviet Union.

Why doesn’t Russia give back northern Manchuria to China? They stole it in 1945. And The Jewish Autonomous Oblast belongs to China as well. Most of Siberia belongs to Mongolia. We can play this game all day long.

Then the Russians can drill for oil in ANWAR, rename the Alaska Pipeline to Nordsteam 3, and build a bigger pipeline and call it Nordstream 4, and sell us the oil for $125 a barrel.

Of course their demand would require completion of the Keystone pipeline to connect to the new Nordstream 4.

If the US refused the connection to Keystone, Putin could threaten WW4 and nuke us from orbit.

Now that is what you'd call a poison pill.

The Ottoman Empire included southern Russia and the Crimea. The Turks want it back!

Alaska may be better off under Russia.
At least Putin will not ban drilling of the huge amount of oil in the Alaska’s Article region.

It’d be interesting if the Russkies revived their claim on California’s Fort Ross and the Russian River area. It’s an LGBT mecca now, so are they sure they’d want it back??
