This is a seat that has gone uncontested in prior election cycles. So there’s that.

The district seems about 40% black and the black Republican candidate seems to have taken a large share of the black vote. Also, the special election voting public may be a higher percentage white than in the general election. So I would not totally extrapolate that to a huge nationwide swing.

Xiden managed to get 40% here.

The seat went uncontested because the prior incumbent was well known and held the seat for nearly 40 years before he died.

The seat only has an R+13 PVI.

The rats should have been able to put up better numbers than 9.89%.

There is a fairly sizable Black vote here.

No one is extrapolating a nationwide swing that high.

However, this shows the environment is very, very, very bad for Democrats. We have multiple data points including the NJ and VA elections.

The current uniform swing seems more like 12 points.

This was just an extraordinarily lopsided result.

Thanks for the update. This result is surprising. Usually it doesn’t much matter that the (R) is black. Generally, blacks vote Dem regardless, because quotas are central to the Dem platform, to the point Dems want less stringent penalties imposed against blacks for the same crimes (under the rubric of equity). Such quotas are at least nominally anathema to the Pubbies.

Maybe this is a statistical aberration. A 10% turnout isn’t exactly anything to write home about.

A state legislator who dies in office, at age 90. That's not something you hear about everyday. Leatherman at 85, in 2017:

That's a remarkably youthful 85.

What’s also real are the big number of blacks running as candidates in the party of Lincoln.

Leatherman converted to Gop during the Thurmond and Hollings period. He owned a company connected to road paving, maybe cement or paving, and headed up the State Transportation area for a long time. Like his own personal ATM.
Was not a conservative leader at all.

The voters are sexiest. We all know that if the voters were not sexist, the voter would elect Suzanne.

Of course, Suzanne could have make Bernie Sanders look like Ronald Reagan, but the LIBERALS would say it was sexism!! 🤓

Sounds like Democrat/commie voters are demoralized and was maybe also a factor in this amazing blow out win for the GOP.

“Maybe this is a statistical aberration. A 10% turnout isn’t exactly anything to write home about.”

The 10% is about the norm for spring elections. Seats for town councils, sheriffs, schoolboards and county boards are up for grab. If conservatives got off their fat butts and voted in these spring elections, conservatives would control towns, counties and schoolboards. By controlling counties, you can control the state. This isn’t rocket science.
