They committed most of their VDV (airborne) troops very early. I think every VDV major unit has been identified as having been in the line by now. Thats the best, not the worst.

Well, there was the plausible possibility of nuclear exchange.

Even so, where are they taking their greatest losses? That will answer some questions, yes?

Thank you for acknowledging I’m correct in what I say. I’ll let others decide which of us correctly assesses the relative strength of our intelligence versus Russia’s.

The US has an intelligence system leagues beyond that of anybody else ever in the world’s history. We can gather and act on our intelligence. This includes movements of personnel, equipment and supplies hundreds of miles behind the front lines. Because of our system of military satellites, we can see over any horizon. At any time we choose, we could completely wipe out enemy supply lines, isolating their combat forces from support.

Putin says he can strike at gathering sites for aid to Ukraine. He may actually be able to do this, and doesn’t because that would be war (instead of limited war). But, he doesn’t have airborne radars circling over Belarus. So, I doubt he actually can see the gathering sites in real time, and has to rely, e.g., on the western media.

Our ability to see over any horizon gives us advantages in terms of the air war and also in the missile war, but these advantages are less pronounced because of the need to respond in real time, especially when we face hypersonic threats. (The later consideration is why they have invested so heavily in hypersonic and we haven’t. We don’t have anything like the challenge they have, in penetrating our defenses.)

With the advantage we have in intelligence, and other advantages, we actually defeated Iraq twice, the first time in 100 hours, and the second time in 42 days. Our military likewise defeated the Taliban in about one month (calculating the start and end of defeating the Taliban is a bit tricky.)

Rubber meets the road, we won quickly against second-rate military powers, and they didn’t win quickly against Ukraine.

I didn’t see this post until now. Thank you for your service. If we’re just a couple of fellows who served in the military having a conversation, I’d want you to know that I appreciate that you played a role in defending my freedom of speech.

The VDV units were taking very heavy losses. Several brigades of them were withrawn as combat ineffective. And that was from the first day at Hostomel.

Another way to check is the number of destroyed BMD vehicles, which are used only by the VDV, as part of the basic infantry squad. Oryx is currently counting 114 documented lost BMDs (2 and 4), and we should add at least 50% to that as not all vehicles are likely to have their pictures taken. Just from that estimate of 150-170, that represents almost two whole VDV regiments wiped out. Add those units that were deployed in an air assault role without their vehicles, that were savaged at Hostomel and elsewhere in heliborne assault, and we are talking of a couple of VDV Division-equivalents. Thats a lot, maybe 25% of the maneuver unit strength of the VDV.
