Reparations for slavery: A road map
Seattle Times ^ | April 15, 2022 | Clyde W. Ford

The California state task force on reparations for Black residents voted on March 22 to limit eligibility to individuals whose lineage could be traced to enslavement in America. While this first-in-the-nation task force hotly debated the issue, more important is that it was impaneled by Gov. Gavin Newsome to study and develop reparation proposals. While many look toward California, awaiting its findings and conclusions, Gov. Jay Inslee, who’s been out in front on many issues of racial equity, should not wait. He should impanel a similar reparations task force, with similar objectives in Washington state.

I hear you. My ancestors were exploited in God forsaken coal camps in Appalachia. If we open this door, does everyone who had ancestors who were exploited in some way, get reparations for the sins of the past?? How far does this go??

I’ve heard talk that we should also do reparations for American Indians. If the reparations for slavery thing happens, isn’t it inevitable that reparations for every conceivable wrong from the past will be on the table??? Do we really want to go there??

Pretty sure more Native Americans got the shaft than ‘black slaves’.

Are you calling Oprah a “rolling doughnut”?

If he doesn't then I shall.

She's the only "black Beauty Queen" I'm aware of that one must first roll in flour, wait for the wet spots to appear and then...um, do what one does to a rolled-in-flour behemoth, I guess.

She's a worthless, loudmouthed, quivering mass of crap.

OH, yeah...did I mention she's a racist, also?

And Whoopie-pie Goldberg is exactly like here...just uglier.

Absolutely! Meanwhile, conservatives should be flooding ghettos with banners and ads proclaiming:

The New California Gold Rush!
Move to California today to establish your place in line!
Were your ancestors slaves? You will receive $300,000 FREE MONEY!
Limited-time offer so MOVE NOW!

If Atlanta and Philly and Detroit alone empty out, we'd have MAGA Congressional supermajorities and Trump back in office.

Meanwhile the California metros will be overrun with millions of claim seekers.

Any current slave owners need to free their slaves immediately! Any current slaves deserve reparations. Otherwise, this has been settled 150 years ago!

What about the Irish slaves? Japanese, Chinese etc.?
What about White slavery, a.k.a. sex trafficking, that goes on to this day?
Will we ever get credit for being one of the earliest nations to resoundingly put a stop to slavery?

“The California state task force on reparations for Black residents voted on March 22 to limit eligibility to individuals whose lineage could be traced to enslavement in America.”

Based on articles at the time, the opening statement is materially false. Going beyond descendants of US slaves, the “task force” extended eligibility to any blacks who descended from residents of the US in the 19th century. Descending from an enslaved person is not required.

The next step will be discovering that legitimate proof for either condition (especially actual slavery) is hard to come by. It will end up with affidavits claiming oral tradition. Pigford was nothing compared to what this will unleash.

Just EXACTLY what form of “proof” would be required to collect? Who is going to pay for researching and finding said “proof”?

If cali and wash states actually do this, will there be charter busloads of colored folk from all over America driving to both States to collect? How will they make sure people do not collect twice? Or is this ONLY for people who actualy live in those two States? How do they intend to PROVE that they actually live in the States? How do they intend to actually PROVE that the people are who they claim to be? How do they intend to be certain that people are not standing in lines multiple times using different names?

Seems like this will require far more “proof” of things than voting does, how do they intend on not “disenfranchising” people?

How will people “prove” they are of African decent? Who will pay for that testing?

It just seems a little hard to comprehend that there is a way to prove such things. Like, say that all white folk needed to PROVE that their ancestors did NOT own any slaves, how would you go about proving that?

There must be DNA tests

Any tested person with white or other non African genes gets no reparations

No we will never get any credit for that. Instead we are told that problems of black people today are due to the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws. And it is this legacy that causes the need for reparations.

I think that is (expletive deleted) reasoning, but that’s what is being said, that legacies of slavery and Jim Crow and redlining blacks into bad neighborhoods over the years has caused all of the social ills of black folks.

Gee, Cali apologized but paid NOTHING to living victims of WWII Japanese internment, which those states pushed on the Federal government:

The Left wants permanent wealth redistribution based on race. Reparations will not be a one time payment.

My great grandfather fought for the Union in the Civil War(181st Ohio infantry) so I think I should get a full credit for any reparations owed on my taxes.

How can the descendants of the Union soldiers who died in the Civil War prove that they were fighting to end slavery rather than fighting to save the Union, or because they were forced to join the Army to avoid going to prison? Maybe some old family letters to loved ones?

Makes perfect sense. People who never owned slaves will pay reparations to people who were never slaves. All this in states where slavery never existed.
