Some common mushrooms likely have more than 17,000 sexes, researchers report March 31 in PLOS Genetics. The work could help us better understand the evolution of sexual reproduction as well as showcases the increasing power of genome sequencing.

While scientists have long suspected that certain species of fungi have thousands or even tens of thousands of biological sexes, the new research employed cutting edge genetic tools to confirm the extreme diversity of sexes in Trichaptum mushrooms.

“The pace of advances in DNA sequencing are just mind boggling,” says Joseph Heitman, a geneticist and infectious disease expert at Duke University who wasn’t involved in the study but has investigated fungal mating strategies before. “This kind of study would have been cost and time prohibitive even five years ago.”

The fungi weren’t chosen for their looks, of course. The international team of researchers decided to examine species in this genus because they had been studied by scientists previously and were easy to grow in the lab.

One of these things just doesn’t belong,
If you can guess which one is not like the others,
Then it’s time to play our game.”

They can make even the fascinating topics of occultism and magic seem boring. Liberalism is a disease.

So all of those Freaks on tik tok are actually mushrooms?

Hmmph, I would have guessed toxic mold.

I think the point to be taken is that if you did a similar experiment on humans you get TWO sexes. The recent pregnancies at a women’s prison would seem to support that conclusion.

“So you completely missed the joke in a fungus sex thread?”

That would be a complete miss. I took the wrong fork.

At least someone (else) understands that sex is not gender and gender is not sex.

WHAT a bunch of BS!

Sexual reproduction means that genetic material used to create a new organism comes from more than one source organism.

In the animal kingdom, there are only two sexes in regard. That’s it. Half the genetic material from the male and half from the female. Heck, I’d even say in some it might be 60/40 or 55/45...

Now imagine a fungi from the Fungus Kingdom. It uses spores to reproduce. Are these people saying you need 17K parents, each with some but not all of their spores hosting the genetic material to produce an offspring? Of course not!

That would mean that mushrooms and fungi would have to physically take up a huge amount of space close enough for the 17K parents to live!

The DNCMedia really are stupid.

Woke scientists will try to find a way to use this as a justification for “gender fluidity” in humans.

Actually, there are a dozen or more sex chromosome abnormalities that affect the ratio.
