It’s difficult to quantify how frequently people are reinfected, in part because many infections are now going unreported. Dr. Pulliam and her colleagues have collected enough data in South Africa to say that the rate is higher with Omicron than seen with previous variants.
This is not how it was supposed to be. Earlier in the pandemic, experts thought that immunity from vaccination or previous infection would forestall most reinfections.
The Omicron variant dashed those hopes. Unlike previous variants, Omicron and its many descendants seem to have evolved to partially dodge immunity. That leaves everyone — even those who have been vaccinated multiple times — vulnerable to multiple infections.
“If we manage it the way that we manage it now, then most people will get infected with it at least a couple of times a year,” said Kristian Andersen, a virologist at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego. “I would be very surprised if that’s not how it’s going to play out.”
The new variants have not altered the fundamental usefulness of the Covid vaccines. Most people who have received three or even just two doses will not become sick enough to need medical care if they test positive for the coronavirus. And a booster dose, like a previous bout with the virus, does seem to decrease the chance of reinfection — but not by much.

This is my experience as well. I had rona in July 2020 and was moderate flu like sick. No vax for me, but at my work all my colleagues are double vaxed and boosted with many double boosted. About 75 out of 125 of them have gotten covid this year. That seems a very high percentage of them and a lot of “breakthrough” infections. Some were very sick and out for two weeks. I have been around many of them, and I have not gotten it. Not sure what all that means, but in my mind it seems like the vax does not work. I mean, if it works why isn’t it working?
The real cognitive dissonance is that all of them are thankful they got the vax cause “it could have been so much worse without it”.

Yes, I have appointments with two large hospitals in the NYC area that are doing Covid recovery programs. I know 12 people who had Covid and are dealing with the same, and worse, symptoms than I am. The brain fog and cognitive function symptoms are the ones that concern me the most. I have never been someone who complains or stays at home at the first sign of a sniffle. But I kid you not when I say that I forget things, cannot concentrate on simple tasks, struggle to remember names and events, and just do not feel like myself six months ago.
Even some of the doctors that I have talked with are seeing long haul Covid more and more and when they express concerns to hospital senior management, they are often silenced. I believe that the evil in charge know what is going on and want this to continue. When doctors who are well-respected in their fields are all saying (off the record to me) that this virus was absolutely intentional and designed to cull the herd and the injection damage the young from reproducing, you know that this thing is bigger than we were first told.

I am 82. Got shots for Smallpox—measles—mumps, tetanus, etc as a kid. NEVER had any ‘boosters’ except for tetanus—barbed wire—rusty nail—whatever.
I got the Salk vaccine on a sugar cube. NO boosters.

Well ... I am deplorable, ultra-MAGA, FReeQish, unvaxxed and have had Chinavirus 3 times (2020, 2021 & 2022). Not sure where I fit in your scheme of things. Hope sane. :)
Successfully treated the last 2 times with HCQ/Zith/Zn, which had immediate benefits each time, i.e., MUCH IMPROVED within 6 hours of first doses.
You missed my point. Polio, Smallpox, etc vaccines were great. My point is none of them constructed a virus proof filter in your respiratory system. If exposed to virus, no vaccine can stop it’s entry in body.
Only thing vaccines can do is create anti-bodies for the particular virus. Many times that works so well, even when infected, the virus is killed off before any symptoms appear. That gives impression to low IQ people that vaccine prevented infection. Truth is it is physically impossible for any vaccine to “prevent” infection. Vaccine only helps kill the virus before it makes you seriously sick.
I am a living example of this. I was vaccinated for smallpox at age 7. 2 years later I got infected and had all the symptoms of smallpox such as high fevers and white blisters all over the body. But because of the anti-bodies present from vaccine, my body was able to recover from a virus attack which has mortality rate of 30%+.
Not “vaxxed”. I had it once for sure in August 2021. I work from home and only took 1 1/2 days off only because I wanted to sleep. Low-grade fever for 5 days. No loss of smell or taste. I did experience ravenous hunger though, and a sugar craving like no other. I’m pretty sure I had it a second time in February 2022. My BF tested positive - I never took a test. All I had that time was a cough and a couple sniffles. The biggest difference was after the second time, my nose suddenly became super sensitive to certain smells I don’t ever remember smelling before. One I finally pinpointed to an ingredient in some soaps. And it actually is not a pleasant smell. It does seem to be dissipating now.
