Kemp defeats Perdue in Georgia, a major blow to Trump

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp was projected to win his renomination for a second term on Tuesday, overcoming a primary challenge from former Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) and, by extension, former President Donald Trump.

ABC and NBC News both called the race for Kemp around 8:30 p.m. ET.

Kemp, a one-time ally of the former president, stirred Trump’s ire in the wake of the 2020 presidential election after he rebuffed his pleas to overturn President Biden’s electoral victory in Georgia. Trump vowed to campaign against Kemp, eventually persuading Perdue to enter the race for governor in hopes of ousting him.

True to my word I will be sending money to fat momma.

I will not go that far but I appreciate the sentiment. However... If Kemp and the GOPe try to make hay out of this "victory" and go full on anti MAGA then I will give to the Hippo.

GA wants it rough so GA gets it rough.

It looks like Herschel Walker and Jody Hice are the only two Trump backed candidates that won.

Hice ran for Secretary of State and got his clock cleaned by Raffensperger. Burt Jones is the lieutenant governor candidate.

I am not on the ground in GA, so I can’t speak to why, but I have watched the public polling and Perdue never moved the needle an ounce from day one... the consolidation of the anti-kemp vote when the other person withdrew was last time any movement happened around him at all...

His campaign just seemed absolutely stillborn the entire cycle.

Those claiming hanky panky with Kemp winning haven’t been paying attention... He’s never been under any threat to not winning the primary nowhere in this primary race was any other candidate showing any traction or viability.

There was never any credible threat to Kemp.. Could Kemp have been primaried?. Perhaps, but its clear that Perdue sure wasn’t going to be the person who would be able to do it.

None of the alternate candidates every got off the ground..

I’m not on the ground in GA, so I won’t try to say I have any insight, but its damned clear that the folks who were put up as alternatives to Kemp didn’t every get off the ground.

My SUSPICION is that no really strong MAGA type candidate was running... but that’s just a general suspicion, absolutely no evidence to back that up.

How about this idea. All politics are local, and Republicans like the job Kemp is doing. Given his blowout win against a former US Senator who was heavily pushed by an ex-President, that seems like a logical conclusion.

In 2020, people were going to GA for a couple of days, voting and then going back to their home states.

Perdue was lazy. Did not campaign. Thought name recognition was enough

Purdue was a terrible candidate. He has no energy at all.

In my opinion, there were just too many pro-gun voters that decided that the constitutional carry law was their main/only point of consideration.

Kemp simply played the politics correct and timed that issue out, along with the money most homes got from the budget surplus.

We got beat, but I'm still going to vote for Kemp over Abrams.

You don’t live in Georgia obviously

Plenty of folks here complained about Kemp. Many in the state like him. He campaigned hard. No one out worked him

May not like it but he won fair and square

That’s a bit harsh—I’m a huge Trump fan (and not a McCain fan), but he did and does make mistakes. Everyone does. . .

“Why didn’t they cross over and vote against Walker as well?”

Erick Erickson has been on the WSB (the largest radio station in the state) saying Herschel Walker is the weakest GOP senate candidate and can’t win.

It’s likely the Democrat crossovers voted for Walker thinking they were voting for the weakest Republican candidate.

Erick Erickson is a never-Trumper. I suspect he was bashing Walker because of his hate for Trump.

Incumbent governors are hard to beat - especially corrupt ones. They have so many side deals going for them.

Hopefully, you’ll be right and Kemp will be governor. Amazingly, he has a great chance. Otherwise, Georgia’s next governor will be able to plant her face in some dough and make gorilla cookies.
