Old VHS tapes could be worth a small fortune: 'Rarity and nostalgia'
Fox Business ^ | 6 June 2022 | Cortney Moore

June 7 is National VCR Day.

Yes, you read that right. Videocassette recorders are still around and there are enough of them to justify a spot on the National Day Calendar — the national day marketing calendar under digital media company Zoovio, Inc.

While most people have retired their VCRs, not everyone has gotten rid of these devices or the VHS tapes that worked with these physical video players.

Some might even be holding onto the retro gadgets after seeing that a sealed, mint-condition "Star Wars" VHS tape from 1977 sold for $57,600 in New Jersey by Goldin Auctions, a collectibles auctioneer, in December 2021.

If you have a collection of a limited-edition or unopened VHS tapes, you could be in ownership of a small fortune.

Vhs aren’t worth much unless they aren’t available of dvd. It is kind of a value marker. Same with super 8.

Have the Civil War series. Not unopened, but unplayed.

Honestly you put a betamax tape up for sale regardless of the movie it will sell.

I have all my laserdiscs and many of my RCA CED discs. I kept rebuying Star Trek every time a new format came out.

More proof that Han shot Greedo first.

Several years ago Disney came out with an animated movie called The Rescuers. When it was first shipped, they discovered that some enterprising animator had placed an image of a nude woman in the window as the characters are flying past city windows. You have to slow the video down and step through each frame to see it. It appears in about two frames of the movie.

My son worked at a store that sold VHS videos at the time and I was able to buy several copies before they were shipped out (they were never put on the floor for sale).

I still have them. My thought at the time was maybe someday they might be worth something. (probably not much)

I still got a VCR player. Got some old movies, probably the best known of which is the Rocky series, up to movie V.

“I have an old Beta porno tape”

I still remember when I was kid in the early 90’s in those small VHS stores that had a “curtain back room” where old dudes would go. My brother who was 8 years older told me when I asked him that maybe there’s some Disney stuff at the back “when you’re older. Those aren’t Disney that you know of”

Just dumped quite a few. The tape does deteriorate.

The only thing that old VCR’s should be used for is to port old tapes to digital formats. If you have a potentially valuable VHS tape, get it converted to digital at 60 frames per second. That prevents problems due to NTSC being interlaced.

Is this the latest hipster craze? I need to figure out a way to find the next hipster craze and then retire after cashing in on it.

I work in Hollywood post and pre production. After x number of years, the tape will deteriorate UNLESS it’s kept regularly in cold temperature. I’ve been to the Paramount “off-site” warehouse where they keep the VHS tapes of their old movies and it’s like a damn public library.
