Texas AG Ken Paxton launches investigation over fake Twitter accounts

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating fake accounts on Twitter for potential violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, expanding the Lone Star State’s push to look under the hood of the prominent social media platform to learn how it operates.

Inauthentic accounts at Twitter have received fresh scrutiny in recent weeks, as billionaire Elon Musk has expressed reservations about his looming acquisition of the platform in light of the number of automated and anonymous accounts potentially representing a greater share of users than the company has suggested.

Mr. Paxton issued a civil investigative demand to Twitter this week to determine whether Twitter has made a false claim about its users that could violate Texas law.

“Texans rely on Twitter’s public statements that nearly all its users are real people. It matters not only for regular Twitter users, but also Texas businesses and advertisers who use Twitter for their livelihoods,” Mr. Paxton said in a statement. “If Twitter is misrepresenting how many accounts are fake to drive up their revenue, I have a duty to protect Texans.”

Twitter has TONS of bots and fake accounts. I get them spamming my small account and if that's happening to little old me then it's just the tip of the iceberg!

What kind of power does he have in this? He can order investigations, but what can he do once the obvious fraud is found?

And why isn’t it a Criminal Fraud Investigation with a Warrant for Dorsey attached?

Get that type of news out there and it could devalue Twitter stock. Elon would be able to walk away because Twitter will be in breech (or words to that affect), but the damage will have been done. Investors will walk away. BOOM!

I suppose the SEC (not the football conference) isn’t doing it’s job ... just like every other government entity. If they fail to do their job, we might as well save our tax dollars and send this lazy ass leftist government employees to the unemployment line.

There are legal implications if those bots were factored in to lure money from advertisers, etc. That’s fraud.

I never “got” Twitter. I assume it’s like Fakebook as it was developed by the government and then weaponized to steal elections...but why is it so pervasive?

Imagine if you discovered that your ad agency was charging for reaching 1000 potential customers but was actually only reaching 500. You could sue. As well as report fraud to the police. After all, that ad agency has lots of other clients. All could sue as well as report fraud.

Twitter may be in worse trouble than they are imagining right now.

Good. I own stock in twitter indirectly though a mutual fund. If it’s not worth what they say it is, I want to know. The SEC should be all over this.
