New York governor: State to limit where guns can be carried

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York will ban people from carrying firearms into many places of business unless the owners put up a sign saying guns are welcome, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday, describing a deal with state legislative leaders that is being finalized.

The legislation — hurriedly written after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state’s handgun licensing law — will include provisions that make it harder to apply for a permit to carry a gun outside the home and create more rules around firearm storage in homes and vehicles.

Businesses who want guns would have to put up a sign reading: “Concealed weapons welcome here,” or words to that effect, Hochul said. “Otherwise the presumption will be in the state of New York that they are not.”

Gun rights groups bristled at the idea that firearms could be banned from many places by default.

“She’s telling business owners how they need to conduct their business if they want to stay open. These are unconstitutional mandates, and I think it’ll be struck down by the courts,” said Aaron Dorr, the executive director of NY State Firearms Association.

“We are going to be facing a wave of concealed weapons in our parks, our subways, gathering places,” Hochul said.

Hochul didn’t release the text of the legislation Wednesday. She said she’s working with lawmakers to hammer out specifics, including on her proposal to bar people with a history of dangerous behavior from getting permits.

This will effectively make the carry permit worthless.

So you can’t be on the subway, in the park, near x,y, or z. So anyone with a permit can be arrested at any time. Yeah, this is gonna get struck down hard.

Oh, I hope so.
When they lose, concealed carry will be allowed everywhere.
Zero restrictions.

There’s a reason they are called “concealed weapons”.

“Some people are just determined to be STUPID.”

Not stupid - but rather determined. The dems will keep at it right after a defeat and never give up.

If I were a business owner in NY I would be thanking the governor. My sign would go up immediately. This ought to create unfair competition.

Likely that 5-7 years before this gets struck down by the courts. And which point they will immediately put into law another new law to has the same effect but is different.

I don’t think they can.

Businesses should ban police entering for any reason without a warrant issued by a judge. So police want to eat lunch, get a warrant!

“Kathy Hochul is heading for yet another defeat at the US Supreme Court.”

Absolutely.

Illinois went through much the same thing several years ago, and it had to do the opposite of what NY is proposing: In Illinois, if a business does NOT want CCW on its premises it has to publicly post very specific signage to that effect. In other words, the right of CCW on business premises in Illinois is assumed unless the business says otherwise (though there are legal exceptions for businesses whose gross sales of liquor exceed 50%, and doctor’s offices, etc.).

What next? No breathing, farting, sneezing, wearing pants, etc. etc. unless there’s a sign at the door saying it’s allowed?

The law and common sense simply doesn’t work that way.

This governor of NY is as dumb as she is stubborn.

When bad or ridiculous laws are made by idiots it’s the responsibility of every citizen to ignore/disobey those bad laws.

“New York will ban people from carrying firearms into many places of business unless the owners put up a sign saying guns are welcome”

2nd plus 1st amendments will say they have the cart before the horse

what NY Gov dictator wishes to do would likely only pass SCOTUS muster under the reverse condition they seek

instead of ruling the no guns mandate UNLESS the business owner posts a sign, it would need to be the opposite - only IF a business owner posts a sign (yes, its my private propery and I can make rules about permissible conduct on my property).
