“Not everyone is able to just quit their job or jobs”

When I homeschooled my child (K-12, accepted into our state’s prestigious university) I worked in the evenings and weekends. Homeschooling doesn’t take as long as traditional school because you aren’t transitioning 30 kids many times a day, etc.

There were many parents I knew who worked from home or had other non-traditional jobs so that they could home school. It’s doable if you get creative. And SO rewarding.

“I don’t know how any parent...especially a conservative Christian parent ...could even consider sending their kids to public schools.”

Agree, and I don’t know of any conservative parent who STILL uses public schools.

“It’s called making sacrifices, and, finding a way to make it happen.”

Wow, you’re asking for it. Next thing you’ll say that giving up the shiny new F150, or having kids double-up in bedrooms (as many here did), in order for parents to protect their kids from the groomers in public schools is worth it.

How dare you!

“Not qualified how?”

Agree - anyone capable of writing coherent sentences here is capable of home schooling. More likely it’s a confidence problem, not capability problem.

Best thing we ever did was leave the public school system. Daughter has much less anxiety, not sexualized/gender-confused at 13, and actually wants to do the school work instead of making excuses not to.

Try telling that to the average person in the depressed former steel town I live in with a sky high unemployment rate and low wages. I guess they could quit their minimum or slightly higher wage jobs and try to get on welfare. Don’t judge other people until you are living in the same situation, have the same abilities and a similar low income. A lot of people around here are hitting the food banks just trying to keep up with inflation. By the way its hard to sacrifice for your kids when your trying to put food on the table for them.

You’re singing to the choir. I’m just saying what I’ve been told by family. They feel unqualified to teach their kids. They seem frozen with fear.

I have tried explaining options are available if you think you cannot teach a specific discipline but the fear of failure and I think the biggest fear is if they fail, what may the state try to do to the parent.

That frustrates the Hell out of me. Kids would be so much better off being homeschooled. And considering just the costs alone, we can do much better.

And, the Covidiots took the opportunity to screw up the delivery of education during the lockdowns that saw a dramatic increase in youth suicides, especially of young girls, that has scared some parents to death and they will never try homeschooling.

Damn shame.

In addition, some districts will offer harsher punishments for white students who break the rules than non-white students as part of “culturally responsive discipline” (one rebranded form of critical race theory)

This is an important part. School administrators will be under tremendous pressure to NOT have black discipline rates be higher than white rates. That means that, in schools with mixed populations, they will have to let ferals run wild, but suspend and expel white kids for any infraction, or even for attempting to defend themselves from attack.

If you are a parent, and have kids in schools with significant mixed demographics, be prepared to pull your kid out, rather than have him be sacrificed on the altar of "racial equity".

I homeschooled both boys from elementary school through high school. High school is the only time things got a little complicated - chemistry and calculus mainly.

The thing is, at least for us with homeschooling, we didn’t just teach them facts but how to learn and how to get answers. So when they got stuck, they either did the research and found the answer on their own or with us. There are so many resources online it is crazy. And there are a la carte online courses or DVD courses to use for certain subjects (if you don’t want to pay for a whole program).

It’s very doable… my younger son is getting his degree in accounting now, which can get pretty complicated, but he is using the same skills to get help on topics when the professor or textbook is not clear.

HSLDA did research a few years back that showed that the parent’s education level had no bearing on the academic outcome of homeschooled kids. The one on one and immediate feedback to ensure concepts were being understood was a far better predictor.

Obviously you had a job or jobs which paid you enough money to be able to do that. Do you think some poor people who live in the projects and work at Walmart are able to do the same? Kudos to you for what you’ve done for your kids, but realize not everyone is able to do it.

The average FReeper is MORE qualified to teach kids than the average current public-school teacher. At least you are more likely to be comfortable with math through algebra, and have a good idea about grammar, something that you would expect from (but be disappointed) public school teachers (who are drawn from the low end of the IQ spectrum these days).

Average SAT scores by major

https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-the-average-sat-score-for-every-college-major-2014-10

Education majors: reading 482, math 482, writing 474

Now, compare this to your SAT scores. Most FReepers will be better than this

Re: Daycare homeschools

In the 80s and 90s when I was homeschooling my children, several parents asked me to homeschool their children. In Maryland, at the time, it was illegal.
