Jan. 6 Hearing Depicts Donald Trump as Content to Let the Riot Rage
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 22, 2022 | Scott Patterson

Posted on 07/22/2022 6:25:10 AM PDT by karpov

President Donald Trump spent hours in front of a television at the White House watching the attack on the Capitol unfold on Jan. 6, 2021, ignoring pleas from staff, supporters and family to call off the rioters—and even at times encouraging them—according to testimony Thursday at a prime-time hearing of the House committee investigating the attack.

“The case against Donald Trump, in these hearings, is not made by witnesses who are his political enemies,” said Rep. Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.), the committee’s vice chair, at the close of the hearing, the eighth and last of the current series. “It is instead a series of confessions by Donald Trump’s own appointees, his own friends, his own campaign officials, people who worked for him for years, and his own family.”

In a series of messages on his Truth Social social-media network after the hearing, Mr. Trump challenged the testimony. He called Ms. Cheney, a longtime political foe, a “sanctimonious loser” and said the committee presented “so many lies and misrepresentations.”

In more than two hours of recorded and live testimony, led by Reps. Elaine Luria (D., Va.) and Adam Kinzinger (R., Ill.), the committee portrayed a president sitting idly by, watching the events on television as he contemplated his own fate, while aides, family members and security officials grew increasingly fearful and pleaded for him to take action to quell the violence.

That violence continued for 187 minutes between Mr. Trump’s speech at the Ellipse near the White House and the release of his video message asking protesters to go home.

The committee played a recording of an interview with an unnamed security official working at the White House on Jan. 6 who testified that the Secret Service detail for Mike Pence grew increasingly worried as the attack escalated in the afternoon

Do you condone the treatment of the J6 political prisoners who have not been accorded due process? Do you believe the J6 committee is properly constituted? Why do you rely on cherry picked, edited "evidence" from an illegitimate committee? Do you believe Trump should have been impeached twice?

Do you believe the 2020 election was stolen?

If the President does not act to quell a riot it's because he supports the riot.

Get lost, you loser.

The President has no resources at his disposal to quell a riot after the leadership of Congress already rejected his request to send troops several days earlier.

Take your Pelosi/Schumer love interests somewhere else.

The National Guard reports to Trump, not Pelosi or the major of D.C. He could have called them up at any time and had them ready.

The J6 riots were a setup.

No question about it. Pelosi and the democrats wanted a riot so they could immediately turn attention from the stolen election and the nationwide democrat riots throughout 2020.

The hypocrisy by the media and the democrats, who called the 2020 nationwide democrat riots, looting and arson "mostly peaceful protests" and then called a mostly peaceful protest in which a small percentage of tourist/protesters strolled through the open doors of the Capitol an "insurrection," is truly breathtaking.

The President has no legal jurisdiction over the U.S. Capitol -- especially when Congress is in session. That's one of the clear distinctions between the authority of the legislative and executive branches of government under our Constitution.

That's why he can only show up for his State of the Union address at the invitation of the Speaker of the House.

He may not have been able to send the Guard to the Capitol without the Capitol Police requesting them but they could have been ready when the request came.

“And Pelosi rejected the troops who were offered to her in advance.”

That might be the basis of his “delay” since he’d already requested the troops and Pelosi or someone denied it.

If Trump would’ve sent out the National Guard, his political opponents would’ve said he was using them in his ‘coup attempt’ or using them to ‘attack democracy.’

It was a “damned if you do” and “damned if you don’t” scenario.

Never forget, he offered the National Guard to help quell the liberal riots in liberal cities during the “Summer of Love.”

They refused the help.

It's not even clear that these witnesses exist. WSJ has a paywall.
