Jan. 6 Hearing Depicts Donald Trump as Content to Let the Riot Rage
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 22, 2022 | Scott Patterson

Posted on 07/22/2022 6:25:10 AM PDT by karpov

President Donald Trump spent hours in front of a television at the White House watching the attack on the Capitol unfold on Jan. 6, 2021, ignoring pleas from staff, supporters and family to call off the rioters—and even at times encouraging them—according to testimony Thursday at a prime-time hearing of the House committee investigating the attack.

“The case against Donald Trump, in these hearings, is not made by witnesses who are his political enemies,” said Rep. Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.), the committee’s vice chair, at the close of the hearing, the eighth and last of the current series. “It is instead a series of confessions by Donald Trump’s own appointees, his own friends, his own campaign officials, people who worked for him for years, and his own family.”

In a series of messages on his Truth Social social-media network after the hearing, Mr. Trump challenged the testimony. He called Ms. Cheney, a longtime political foe, a “sanctimonious loser” and said the committee presented “so many lies and misrepresentations.”

In more than two hours of recorded and live testimony, led by Reps. Elaine Luria (D., Va.) and Adam Kinzinger (R., Ill.), the committee portrayed a president sitting idly by, watching the events on television as he contemplated his own fate, while aides, family members and security officials grew increasingly fearful and pleaded for him to take action to quell the violence.

That violence continued for 187 minutes between Mr. Trump’s speech at the Ellipse near the White House and the release of his video message asking protesters to go home.

The committee played a recording of an interview with an unnamed security official working at the White House on Jan. 6 who testified that the Secret Service detail for Mike Pence grew increasingly worried as the attack escalated in the afternoon

“...portrayed a president sitting idly by, watching the events on television as he contemplated his own fate”

Lest we forget. What was Congress in the midst of doing when a small part of the rally entered Congress? The electoral votes of several states were set to be challenged. The crowd entered, almost as if planned, to contest the electoral votes of Arizona. This vote was postponed until order was restored several hours later.

All other motions to contest state electoral votes were dropped. Were there serious questions raised by early-morning appearance of Biden votes in urban precincts in AZ, GA, MI, PA, & WI that could have been debated in Congress on January 6? Of course. But all that ended right as the Capitol’s doors were opened up and an unarmed crowd let in. Which party had control of Congress on January 6?

The question has always been one of leadership performance/style, and the decision to support or oppose an elected official on that basis is valid. But the left is attempting to fashion Trump's Jan6 actions, or the lack of them, into criminal behavior by implementing a show trial in the guise of a "hearing".

While beating their chests for democracy, Rats and Rinos are attacking the Republic. And their goal is to rig another election (2024) by throwing Trump into jail etc., if possible.

I support Trump not only for his accomplishments, but to stand against a dire threat our Republic. His leadership style and personality traits do not, IMO, offset his value as a force for the protection of our Constitution.

Of course they do. They also leave out how the months long riots , actual riots, across the nation and the sympathetic media coverage normalized violence as a protest. So once again the left wants it both ways and hopes no one notices.

Why don’t they look at why the National Guard was never optimized? Seems that would’ve done a world of good. I

FR manual edit: insert “to” between “threat” and “our”.

Why don’t they look at why the National Guard was never optimized?

Because then they would discover J6 was a setup from the start to distract from the Dem riots and election fraud.

Pathetic. Trump told people to protest peacefully. The rest is up to them. And if what he did is an issue, what about all the other folks who said nothing when the riots broke out when Trump won in 2016? No one said a thing about it and that was worse.

Meanwhile Hunter Biden is committing treason with the CCP and dad is right there with him.

Just barely a peep out of any of the leaders in congress about it. You have Schumer, Pelosi and all the rest of them encouraging violence over RoevWade and yet, not a word from anyone. Schumer threatened a supreme court justice for God’s sakes.

If the President does not act to quell a riot it's because he supports the riot. I will vote for anyone but Trump in the primaries

Which is the same thing you did in 2016, so what's new?

So, he was content to let the riot rage on while at the same time so desperate to get there to calm things down that he “assaulted” a Secret Service agent and tried to grab the steering wheel? Which is it?

There was no riot.

Please provide a video or transcript of the reading of the riot act and the orders to disperse which were then not followed.

We can elect Trump from his cell in ADX Florence if necessary.

So what did these hearings conclude?

Trump was pissed he was cheated.
Trump raged that he was cheated.
Trump took steps to uncover the cheating.
A bunch of nitwits trespassed on the Capitol building, taking selfies along the way.
Trump didn’t stop the trespassers by murdering them en-mass like Tiananmen Square.

Where exactly is the crime on Trump’s part?

The case against Donald Trump, in these hearings, is not made by witnesses who are his political enemies,” said Rep. Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.), the committee’s vice chair, at the close of the hearing, the eighth and last of the current series

What is the proper legislative purpose of these hearings?

The Legislature is not empowered to investigate and to "make a case" against individuals.

That is called a Bill of Attainder, and the Constitution PROHIBITS Congress from passing such.

The President tried to prevent any problems well in advance; Nancy Pelosi refused the security measures. I’m sure we will hear her testify the reasons she had to do that? Waiting”………..

Where exactly is the crime on Trump’s part?

What does it matter?

Congress is not a court, and it's not a Grand Jury. Congress has NO prosecutorial or judicial power.

Furthermore, all Congressional hearings have to have a proper legislative purpose. Passing a Bill of Attainder naming Donald Trump is not a proper legislative purpose.

OK, I just convinced myself.

These hearings are an attempt to attaint an individual and can only be completed by passing a Bill of Attainder.

I think a suit by Donald Trump for a writ of Prohibition, or of Quo Warrento, against the House of Representatives leading to an order to stop these hearings would be example of “[a] Controvers[y] to which the United States shall be a Party”, giving the Supreme Court original jurisdiction.
