Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War without bloodshed....

That's an interesting description. He ended the Cold War? Regardless, RIP. I think he was just the unlucky Soviet leader when things finally reached their breaking point.

And I thought he was living in San Francisco?

"Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War"

That would be Ronald Reagan.

Credit The Liberator, Not The Dictator. “Here’s another column from a freed Soviet, who recalls, ‘On the morning of April 20, 1989, the day my family leaving Moscow, a knock came on my parents’ door. It was our next-door neighbor. Ours being one of the Soviet Union’s cramped, communal apartments, I mean that quite literally. Waving a bottle of vodka, he insisted my father drink a toast. He wanted to celebrate our new freedom, which also meant his: By leaving him our half of the apartment, we were bypassing Soviet restrictions on the sale of state property. Agreeing, my father suggested they toast to Gorbachev. After all, our neighbor was a common day laborer, unlikely to be up on the complex realities of international politics; and more than likely to have imbibed his fair share of politburo propaganda, which Gorbachev, in his hick Caucasus accent, spouted daily. Our neighbor only laughed. ‘Gorbachev? You think Gorbachev gave me this apartment? We’ll drink to Reagan. Reagan gave me this apartment.’’ He gave you a lot more than that, comrade. And I’m sure you know it today.”

Soviet Union went down because of Thatcher, Reagan, JPII, Gorbachev and Chernobyl.

Still claiming that Gorby ended the cold war out of the kindness of his heart, huh?

Not Reagan. He had nothing to do with it... /s

I remember a news headline back in 1978 saying the CIA predicted the Soviet Union would collapse in 12 years. They were just about spot on.

If so, that's the first time the CIA has been spot on about anything in fifty years.

Literally, EVERYONE on this FR thread, who responded in agreement, that Gorbachev won the formal “Cold War”, AND OR ended Communism, just proved the TOTAL devastating power of leftist Revisionist History AND Marxist Theory indoctrination over the minds of “conservatives” and “libertarians” alike.

Neither is true at all, or in any way.

He was one of the better things to happen in the latter half of 1900s. To bad other similar people did not rise in Russian leadership.

Yes, Yeltsin is the one who brought the “We’re friends now” era in. Too bad it didn’t last.

Chuckle… He “ended the Cold War” because Reagan told him at Reykjavík Iceland “there’s only one outcome we will accept… We win and you lose”.

That being said, Gorbachev was smart enough to recognize that his psychopath communist generals wanted World War III… And he knew that Reagan would in fact give it to them if they chose to be belligerent.

I lived through it…. And I remember the “war scare of 1983”… Reagan was an effing around, they were the enemy, they’re Democrat friends over here are still the enemy, and he would’ve blown them to hell if they felt froggy.

I got to stand just a few feet from him when he visited the Chicago Board of Trade. Was smiling and seemed very genial.

We missed a decent opportunity to work with Russia at a key point in time.

Bill Clinton blew a chance to work with Boris Yeltsin, who was an alcoholic (how Russian). What we needed was a Marshall Plan for the former Soviet Union.

Instead Russian Oligarchs looted the economy of Russia. Bill Clinton humiliated Boris Yeltsin on the world stage. NATO interventation in the Balkans was the last straw. The Russians did not forget. That brought the rise of Putin.
