Just refer to all students by their first names. “ Jimmy didn’t hand in Jimmy’s assignment again. If Jimmy isn’t careful I will give an F to Jimmy. “
There is bound to be trouble from this pronoun thing, mistakes made from just trying to keep track of them all. Some years ago I taught some ESL classes at a factory where most of the employees were Hipanic. On the first day of class, two women came into my room to see if they were in my class. I asked their names: Maria and Abel. Well, Abel was a man, but he sure looked like a woman: women’s clothing, jewelry, makeup, hairstyle, mannerisms. And guess what? Asking for pronouns wasn’t a thing back then, but I and everyone else referred to Abel as he and him, and that was fine with him.
My recent employer had a thing for pronouns and when asked what mine were I said, “ ‘His Excellency’ and ‘Your Majesty’ “.
I was never bothered about it again.
