My first thought was “PROUDLY wore a crown of pillaged stones.” The UK was once the largest empire in the world and its legacy to its colonies was work every stone, every back.

The British empire was one of the greatest civilizing influences in history. Where they established governments it was usually far superior to what the inhabitants had previously.

The best thing Britain did for India, was to give them a common language that all the Indians could communicate to each other with.
