Brian Berletic said it best (and he’s man enough to admit he was wrong on certain points): this is the time in the chess match wherein the competitors give up their best pieces in service to overall victory. Russia was barely in the area which Biden recently occupied. Don’t listen to the BS. Russia will win in the end, and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth then it turns out that the Biden/Zelensky nonsense was a Pyrich (sp?) victory. We may not re-gain the Senate, sadly, but we will win in the end.
This is sad for Russia.
If Putin had been less egotistical and kept the Russian army just fighting Islamic state, and using salami tactics on Ukraine, all would have worked for Russia.
This is exactly like the 1850s crimean war — Russia’s “best enemies” are to the south-east and interference in the Islamic world. They lose badly when they face off against the west.
Russian tactics since 2000 should have been to build economically, become less corrupt, use that money to diversify its economy, give a better quality of life to its people (and not let it all go to super-yachts for the oligarchy) and use its military decisively to build up power - so Syria, etc. and also slice Ukraine slice by slice.
the problem is corruption - and it starts at the top. Putin and his “elites” have not “skimmed off” profits at the top, they have grabbed it all.
Russians are smart - if given an opportunity. But that was wasted.
Russia can rebuild - it needs to give up its imperialist mindset and focus on soft power.
