That’s what I tell one of my neighbors who loves to go there. It’s not just Old Sanibel either. It’s Old Florida. The place looks nothing like it did when I was a child. Pockets here and there maybe, but not really. Old Florida was pretty cool. Some might even call it “Dreamville.”
There are a many places in the country that were heaven back in the 1950s and early 60s. I grew up in the Kansas City suburbs in Johnson County, Kansas and my buddies and I still talk about how fortunate we were at that time.
Thats how I feel about California. Except it wasn’t hurricanes, but political stupidity, that changed it.
I was in the process of selling the house here and buying a beachfront house in the last remaining scrap of Old Florida left just before Covid hit. At the time, I could have bought that house with money left over. But I got sidetracked by a family illness. Now the house here is about to close at double what it would have brought pre-Covid, but waterfront houses there are quadruple the price before Covid :(
Not sure what to do now. I was hoping WFH would go away after Covid, but alas. Then I hoped Ian would hit there and scare off the Yankees, but no. Yes, I know it was selfish of me to hope that, but ... Ian would have weakened considerably had it hit there, so ... Okay, yes, I am guilty :(
Old Florida was very cool. And you knew the worse a seafood dive looked on the outside, the better the food would be :)
