With an estimated surface area of over 600,000 square miles, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) is the largest plastic accumulation zone in the world.

Located halfway between Hawaii and California, the GPGP is estimated to contain a whopping 2.41 million tonnes of plastic – and is continuing to grow.

The Ocean Cleanup, a project aimed at cleaning up the GPGP, aims to reduce floating plastic by 90 per cent by 2040Scientists are desperately trying to clear the build-up, and this month have been able to extract 10 tonnes (10,086kg) of plastic, bringing the total of plastic removed to 145 tonnes (145,518 kg)

For those that have enjoyed vast vistas of the Pacific Ocean

No doubt vast amounts originating from southern asian nations.

They should spend less time and money on the climate hoax and more time on real pollution like this

it doesn’t look like 10 tonnes.

maybe soaking wet, but it wouldn’t be hard to identify the countries of origin and hold them accountable for the costs.

One more sad example that the United States is in the minority of countries that give a crap about the environment.

If most of the world pollutes with impunity it really doesn’t matter does it?......same with the idea of EVs BTW.

Isn’t most of the lrge stuff garbage from ships? Also, the vast majority of plastic trash in this ‘island’ are micro particles, decomposing crap, suspended anywhere from the surface to dozens of feet beneath the surface.

But I think this cleanup effort is great. Good for these guys for undertaking it.

“identify the countries of origin and hold them accountable for the costs”

How would that work?

When we were in China on a river cruise we would see their vessels dumping barrels and barrels of trash off the sterns of their boats. Those folks have no idea what pollution is . When we were in Beijing I asked our tour guide, where’s the birds.? He said no birds, pollution.

The new video comes shortly after research revealed that most of the plastic in the GPGP comes from overfishing in two countries - Japan and China. Scientists analsyed 573 kilograms of dry hard plastic debris that they collected with help from The Ocean Cleanup organization in 2019 and found that more than a quarter of the fragments were from 'abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear' (known as ALDFG).

It took America 200 years to get ahead of this in our own backyard.

Big parts of the world are still a few hundred years behind any notion of Environmentalism.

We can practice what we preach, teach and lead.
Be that Shining City on the hill, that lamp beside the Golden Door, as an example of how to do things.

WITHOUT destroying our economy.

I’m curious why we can’t see something 2 1/2 times the size of Texas in satellite imagery.

Your comment is so SPOT ON and logical.

Basically, EVERYBODY needs to play by the rules or NOBODY does. I’m all for being a good steward of the Earth, but why should I pick up my stuff, limit my waste, limit my freedom so a bunch of 3rd world sh!tholes, including China and India with populations over 1.4 BILLION EACH, can pollute with impunity?

Pollution is pollution and standards should apply EQUALLY. Going Green is nothing more than a financial Fraud designed to move money from “Rich Nations” to 3rd world sh!tholes and politicians.

To quote the mean spirited little retard, “How Dare They”

That looks like 0% fishing gear. 86% of Pacific garbage patch is from fishing, mostly Chinese.

Most institutions are corrupt these days. Is this an honest outfit, or money/power grubbing/leftist/WEF outfit?
