The University of Richmond recently removed the name of T.C. Williams, an early benefactor, from its law school because of his alleged ownership of slaves in the 19th century.
The family argues he contributed to the demise of slavery and now argues the university should refund Williams’ previously donated money to the institution.
“If suddenly his name is not good enough for the University, then isn’t the proper ethical and indeed virtuous action to return the benefactor’s money with interest? At a 6% compounded interest over 132 years, T.C. Williams gift to the law school alone is now valued at over $51 million, and this does not include many other substantial gifts from my family to the University,” Rob Smith, Williams’ great-great-grandson, said in a letter to President Kevin Hallock.

Hey... How about some reparations to the descendents of Union soldiers who fought and died to free slaves in the southern states? Actually... An occasional ‘thank you’ wouldn’t be that bad either.
The family should be satisfied that the recognition persisted beyond the end of the nation (and, of course, not donate a penny going forward).

Legally, unless there was some implied/signed understanding of the donation money at the time....there’s not a good case. University may get dragged to a court, but I think this is a case to be dismissed.
In the future, if you wanted to leave a legacy and never have this pop up....you ought to demand ownership of the property on the campus.
I do not give any money to the college I graduated from and never will.

He has a great point. If they’re not good enough then their money shouldn’t be good enough either. So give it back.
That isn’t what they were fighting for - nor was preserving slavery what Southerners were fighting for.
They all have endowments off the charts, soak the hell out of students, and get government taxpayer largesse. Screw them.
