I actually saw that ad on TV last summer or fall a few times (since we get NY sports stations).

I could not believe it.

If a nuke hit NYC the chaos would be beyond imagining.

I am on the other side of the state with no connection to the navy or the Kitsap Peninsula but I do know the Pacific fleet ballistic missile subs (SSBNs) are home ported at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, not -Bremerton. Naval Base Kitsap has numerous locations around the peninsula.

A ten megaton airburst detonated above Bangor would do “medium” structural damage out to about 2/3 of the way to Bremerton (10 mile radius).

Even Bidet* does not.

Yeah, except the red Americans are largely more rural.

All the nukes will do is clear out all the dens of voter fraud, and a LOT of deputy assistant phone sanitizers.

Puget Sound would be a nuclear inferno.

Yep. Also Boeing and NAS Whidbey Island.

Step 1: Don't provoke Russia.

Translation: Appease Putin!

Yeah, because that worked so well with Chamberlain/Hitler in Munich (1938).

Read “ Alas Babylon” about a small florida town after WW3, wrutten in the 60’s, and watch “ On The Beach” about an American sub that puts in Australia after WW3, made in the 60’s

Of course, to modern readers / viewers, those two works contain a lot of ludicrous advice / observations.

In "Alas, Babylon," the protagonists is portrayed as being real smart because he buries a stash containing a 3-lb bag of coffee in preparation for the Post-Apocalyptic Era. "That'll come in real handy!"

(Modern preppers would laugh and say that 300 lbs would be more realistic.)

In "On the Beach" (the movie), there's a scene where Fred Astaire (in a rare dramatic role as a Nuclear Scientist) gets drunk at a party with other survivors in post-atomic Australia and laments, "Do you realize that the background radiation level in this room is NINE TIMES higher than it was before (the bombs dropped)?"

(The hundreds of millions of Europeans who lived comfortably through Chenobyl would have to laugh at that low level.)

Regards,

If we had lasers that could shoot down ICBMs, we would be developing missile defense systems. Sorry, we ain’t there yet.

From what I hear, in Russia you go to a recently stocked FALLOUT SHELTER, in the US, you put some cardboard over your head.

I have lived through several regional disasters. You are absolutely correct the government is in no way ready to handle a very large regional let alone a countrywide catastrophe. Besides if it’s countrywide who’s gonna show up to work for FEMA? They’ll be worried about their own families or taking care of themselves(which conjures up all kinds of Walking Dead scenarios).

“From what I hear, in Russia you go to a recently stocked FALLOUT SHELTER,”

At least one that they tell you is recently stocked! I think you severely underestimate the corruption and graft that goes on in Russia.

” I think you severely underestimate the corruption and graft that goes on in Russia.”

True, through the 1990s, but not nearly as bad now. Simply not tolerated there, as it is in the US.
