Fire Rages At Hong Kong Skyscraper Construction Site, Spreads To Neighbouring Buildings
CNN-News18 ^ | 3/2/2023 | CNN-News18

A fire broke through the upper floors of an under-construction skyscraper in the Tsim Sha Tsui area of Hong Kong and spread to neighbouring buildings in the early hours of Friday (March 3).

Debris falling from the burning construction site led to smaller blazes in adjacent structures which were quickly extinguished by emergency services, local media reported.

In a public warning, the Hong Kong fire service department advised residents affected by the smoke to close their doors and windows, while local media reported that over 100 people living in the area were evacuated.

I hope their fire department mandates sprinklers in all buildings after this.

40-some stories of flaming inferno are gonna make one heck of a mess when the structure comes crashing down. Which it is bound to do eventually.

Has it collapsed into its own footprint yet?

When I visited in the 80s they used bamboo for scaffolding even on high rises.

Depends on if it was literally designed to do that...

The design to collapse into its own footprint depends on the building being complete and intact, and that explosive charges are placed in specific places near the base.

Collapsing in an incomplete state, with fire-weakened structures over the entire height.... I wouldn't bet on anything. it could just as easily fall over like a felled tree, or crumble over many city blocks.

What an awful mess.

Higher drop to the ground if you ever need to escape out a window.

The firemen spraying water on the fire looked pretty ineffective. I guess you try to contain it, wait for the more combustible materials to burn out, and then hose it down for 6 hours or more...

The building was under construction - likely the sprinkler system was not even complete, much less functioning.
