North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum launches his 2024 GOP presidential campaign
NBC News ^ | June 7, 2023 | Henry J. Gomez

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum entered the Republican race for president Wednesday, offering himself as a candidate of "small town values" who can help steer the country in a different direction.

"We need a leader who understands the real work that Americans do every day — someone who’s worked alongside our farmers or ranchers and our small-business owners," Burgum said during his announcement speech in Fargo. "Someone who’s held jobs where you shower at the end of the day, not at the beginning."

Burgum, 66, is the latest addition to a field that is expanding with GOP hopefuls eager to assert themselves as the most appealing alternative to the front-runner, former President Donald Trump.

Early polls have shown Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the strongest Trump rival. But DeSantis' weeks-old campaign has not persuaded others to stand down.

Burgum’s entry followed a Tuesday night launch in New Hampshire by former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and came about an hour ahead of former Vice President Mike Pence’s expected campaign kickoff in Iowa.

"We need a leader who’s experienced firsthand that we win as a country when our innovators and entrepreneurs can soar and when every single person can grow and thrive," Burgum added. "We need a leader who’s clearly focused on three things: economy, energy and national security. And that is why today I'm officially announcing I'm running for president of the United States."

Today, America’s facing new challenges, and how we respond will define our future. We need a new leader for our changing economy.

As Governor of North Dakota, Doug Burgum has cut red tape, balanced the budget, and passed the largest tax cuts in state history - and now he's ready to do the same for America.

Had not heard of him until earlier this week. Has good record, listened to his announcement, sounded good. Where he goes with the campaign is to be seen but overall nice to see that there are lots of credible Republican candidates, governors with solid leadership experience.

Anger, yelling, infighting - that’s not going to cut it anymore.

This is the common theme of Republicans running in 2024, calling out Trump. It will be key for them and for Republicans to actually win in 2024. Right now, in my personal opinion, every time Trump trashes a fellow Republican, he loses votes, he poisons the campaign, he damages or confirms his legacy.

Burgum endorsed former president Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020. Trump also endorsed Burgum during each of his gubernatorial elections.[44]

Energy
Burgum has been very vocal on his support for the fossil fuel industry, especially in the Bakken region of western North Dakota.[45] But he also signed a bill to create clean energy sustainable for the state on April 26, 2021.[46] Burgum supports the Dakota Access Pipeline.[47]

Abortion
In April 2023, Burgum signed a near-total ban on abortion in North Dakota.[48]

LGBT rights
In July 2020, Burgum called the 2020 Republican platform “divisive and divisional” on LGBT issues. During the 2023 session of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly, Burgum signed numerous anti-trans laws, including a near-total ban on gender-affirming care to minors. [49][50][51][52]

Critical race theory
On November 12, 2021, Burgum signed a law banning the teaching of critical race theory in North Dakota K-12 schools.[53]

Taxes
Burgum has signed numerous laws to cut taxes. During the 2023 legislative session, he signed a bill that exempts members of the North Dakota National Guard and reserve from paying income tax,[54] and another that provides over $500 million in tax relief.[55]

I don’t know much about this guy, but he isn’t Lockdown Don, so he has that going for him. He has a lot of upside, I’m sure some Magadonian will be along to hurl invective and call him disloyal to their master. Probably insult his wife and family and make baseless charges of being controlled by the Deep State.

One of the better governors. Businessman before he became a politician. Not Trump nor DeSantis, my two front runners, but will listen to him.
