but did not explain how inmates identified as members of the Barrio 18 gang were able to get guns and machetes into the prison, or move freely into an adjoining cell block and slaughter all the prisoners there. Corruption.

So many Latin American prisons seem to operate like an ungoverned deserted island where the biggest thugs run everything and all that “guards” to is prevent escapes.

I could not deduce from the writing whether the gangs that attacked the women were also women, or were they men from a separate wing?
Those would be some tough, hardened gals to smuggle in lethal weapons and slaughter other women like that. The picture of the two relatives leaning in to give comfort to a sobbing woman moved me to tears.
